Importing bicycle from UK

Hi there

I am looking to buy a Giant Alight, but have been told they will only be in the country in January.  A friend is going to be in the UK and I am wanting to buy a bicycle and get him to bring it back for me on his flight.

I saw that there was a thread but it is a 2010 one, so I am hoping for more updated information.

Can anyone assist me with info on the following:

- What would the import duty be?  In the previous post someone said there is no import duties on a whole bicycle?

- My understanding is that I would also have to pay 14% VAT?

- What is the process?  So when he lands, what does he have to do? Where does he go?  What forms needs to be filled in?  How long does this take?  Can I do it beforehand?

Thanks in advance.

There are no duties on parts, but you will pay duties on a complete bike.

VAT works out to 15.5%, someone will no doubt be along shortly to explain why.

VAT works out to 15.4%. For VAT purposes, SARS inflates the purchase price by 10% and then charges 14% VAT on this new inflated amount, which essentially amounts to 15.4%

For why? They already take enough of my money, the thieving swine...

The Receiver of my Revenue. Where does one pay this, if you've arrived at the airport?

Declare it at customs on the way in. They do make it quite easy, fortunately.

The duty for a full bike is either 30 or 40%. That's what you'll pay Customs 5 clear the bike.

Vat will be added on top of that.

You can claim back the UK vat, which is at 20% vs our 14% so you'll gain a little bit there.

In short... you'll pay out you aalie for bringing in a full bike. Rather just bring in the frame.

Another thing. Compare bike prices in the UK to bike prices in SA (considering the Rand/Pound rate) and you will notice that bikes are actually cheaper here.

Why pay more for a bike from the UK, that probably won't have a warranty and still add another 30% import duty.

Just wait for them to be launched here.

You can get away with doing that 99% of the time . But if they ask you to show your paper work  when you left the country (SA) with the bike then you could have some explaining to do .

unless they live in the UK and are coming here for a holiday

A friend of mine went to the states and he took a bike to the airport the day before and said he was taking it with him. He got some paperwork to say he was taking it with. He never took it with. Then simply bought a new bike there and bought that one back. No questions where asked this side.

That's basically fraud. I'm not going to be high and mighty, but it's an option you can take if you are ok with it.

One day a bicycle, the next day Nkandla.

Thanks for everyone's input. I am importing the bicycle as they are only bringing them to SA in the new year.

A friend is flying with it.  Apparently a bicycle can be part of your R5000 duty free allowance.  Everything above that will be charged at 20%. Oh and then of course VAT.

Not planning on trying to do this illegally

So it seems I might get the bike in duty free.

Thanks for everyone's input.
