So how many of you are dirt roadies?

I don't know, this grondpad marathon culture looks to me like a peculiarly South African thing.
Many of these races, you could probably swap out for a cyclocross bike and do reasonably well.

And it seems that many people get into MTB with the sole purpose of doing Trailseekers etc - never even bothering with the amazing trails we have, spending 8 hours a week training on tarmac, trying to get into the top 10 of their Strava clubs (not hating on Strava - love it, but it does place more emphasis on distance and speed than the quality of the trails and riding).

"MTB" in Europe, Canada, The States, New Zealand, etc, is vastly different to the "MTB" we have in South Africa.

That said, each is entitled to his own preference - the one isn't objectively better than the other... I just find it peculiar that spandex sells so well here compared to baggies :)

I am. I only have a mtb because I like to overtake people in the Capes August on the sides of the road.

I enjoy everything I do on that mtb. Even those small thin gravel roads you get at Tokai or Jonkershoek or Groenkloof... those roads where you can't ride abreasts.

That's always blown me away, the August in Maarts.

Can't understand it myself, but hey, these capies are a different bunch.

Dirt Roadie implies some sort of stamina and fitness...

So I'm just a Dirt Lazy.

I like dirt. I like to ride my mountain bicycle on dirt. I ride it cos it makes me happy. That is all.

I agree completely with what the Sheriff said. Ride your bike when and where you like, it is a Multi Terrain Bike afterall...

Edit: Forgot to answer the question...Yes, sometimes I am a dirt roadie. Other times not.

That is because March and Argus are the two windiest months in the Cape....

They say you are not a real saaklist unless you have done the Orgust.

Just back from my first Epic we were at a braai and people started talking cycling.

This goose aka airhead asks me "Have you ever done the Orgust"

My wife comments "no, but he just finished the Epic"

Airhead responded with "that's so cute"

Come on. Admit it. You liked being called cute at least once in your life....

For me, i'll take anything that is NOT tar, thank you!!

when the road / track  gets narrower and narrower...I'm even more in my element!

If the dirt road is wide enough for me to ride 4x abreast...then so be it - at least it is legal to do so here...

any dirt beats the tarmac and zooming death machines any day!!

I ride some tar now and again for some hill training in Waterkloof, flat dirt roads like Trailseeker races, and do van Gaalens, Hakahana black route, Rad Barn etc.

Is that classified as a dirt roadie?

Very true for me too, I'm getting more nervous and anxious every time I'm on the road.
