Mountain vs. Road

Hi

 

Keen to get some input...

Historically I am a roadie, but have really started enjoying mountain biking of late, more the fun / trail stuff. This was fine over winter as the road bike was nicely packed away. However with all the road races coming up, I'm conflicted as to my training. I definitely feel the mountain has added some strength, but I'm concerned around the fitness or endurance side of things. How do you balance the two?

My chommies that have a dual focus like you take to the MTB for climbing/strength training and the road for endurance/tempo training

What about intensity? When I'm on the road, I generally do hard interval sessions in the week, with longer easier rides on weekends.

yeah, that's what I'm generally thinking. Did a few double headers recently, with intervals the morning and mountain at night, not sustainable though and I suffered a bit on the mountain.

Nothing compares to training on the road for fitness. MTB terrain is too varied to give you the same constant resistance unless you are very disciplined about choosing your routes carefully.

 

I say train on the road for MTB races but not the other way round.

I can never get a 4 hour ride on the MTB without any interruptions, hence I love the road biking for endurance. My road bike is an old 8speed so I sukkel on steep and long climbs, on the Mtb with all the light gears available I often chicken out and climb like Miss Daisy. So roadie definitely enhance my MTB fitness

well im not sure about the endurance side of things

 

but id rather fall gracefully into a car then get hit by a bush.

i did the argus on purely mountain bike training. Bought a cheap silverback only rode it twice before doing the argus.4hr30 but finished it. All because I ragged a mate.

 

If you fit enough you can ride either. Like Wyatt Earp says a bikes a bike.

oh yea and I kept waiting for my roadie mate at the top of every climb :-))

IMHO

Mtb makes you endurance strong, climb strong

Road def. Makes u faster

My opinion, as Earpie says jump on and ride a bike no matter what you will get stronger , or you will have fun

For me fun is brilliant strong is a plus

Remember in road bike racing especially it is much more tactical and you are far more worried about holding on to a leading bunch and closing gaps to a big bunch that is going to have the winner in it.

 

Consequently your type of riding is different possibly more interval like with bursts and attacks etc. That seems to build your overall fitness better.

 

Since i rode more MTB i have found my overall times got worse. The moment i got back on the road bike and rode in bunches that i had to stay with my overall fitness improved.

 

In general MTB is much more individual effort and therefore a purer test of who is the strongest than who is the most tactically savvy. But road riding for endurance and tongue out hanging on to a bunch which translates in to great MTB endurance.

 

MTB is much more individual efforts.
