Women promoting violence against cyclists in Delta Park

Sunday morning walk turned into a nightmare with overcrowded walkways in Delta park overrun by some maniacal cyclists on exact same pathways as walkers and runners, travelling at breakneck speed and shaving by us repeatedly, missing an accident with mm's to spare. To make matters more hair-raising, we can't hear them approaching from behind either (just image I happened to scratch my ear at that exact moment lol)‪#‎accidentwaitingtohappen‬ Pedestrians and cyclists shouldn't mingle in a confined space. To make it more of a trial we have dog poo left by their careless owners in pathways. My pet hate (pun intended) Eish, dodging cyclists and sh*t not my idea of peaceful Sunday morning stroll.

I don't get this. Is there a point to this post that I missed?

I think it has to do with the lack of adequate ablutions at Delta. People are shaving and pooing on the walkways.

Hi Antoinette,

I am sorry that you had a bad experience. If it makes you feel any better, you probably have exactly the same gripe as the vast majority of cyclists that use the Spruit and Delta Park.

Most cyclists are courteous to others, riding carefully and safely amongst the other park users. These cyclists also get buzzed by the few cyclists that think they are Burry Stander (although Burry would never behave so badly), whilst also trying to avoid the landmines that get left in the pathways.

Please don't judge all cyclists by the few bad apples.

Give it a couple of weeks, when everyone has forgotten about their new years resolutions, and everything will settle down a little again.

O ok. In that case then come on guys and girls, be considerate, just step off the trail a little bit to do your stuff.

Hi Antoinette. And welcome to The Hub.

Thanks for posting this here. I'm sure it's going to engender some heated debate.

I'll start off by saying that I'm all three of those. Dog walker, Runner (or Yogger as we like to call them on The Hub) and cyclist. When I'm engaged in any one of those activities, I am always aware of other people doing the others. Perhaps my awareness is heightened by the fact that I do all three.

There will always be incidents when those activities "collide" due to the relative speed and variance of lines, however:

When I'm walking my dog, he's always on a leash and I'm constantly on the lookout.

When I'm Yogging (a rare occurrence, but it does happen), I'm always aware of what's ahead of me and coming up behind me.

And when I'm on my bike, I'm actively looking out for dogs, people, trees, rocks, ruts etc, as I'm acutely aware that, if my attention should wander, any of these things will have me rubber side up in a flash.

I do not steer close to these things, or shave past them, or try to scare them. And I can say without fear of contradiction, that almost all cyclists would ride in the same manner.

So please understand, that these are the actions of a tiny minority of people, and I would hope that you will not tar us all with the same brush.

See you on the trails,

Regards

Gecko

Yes.

She joined a cycling website to compalin about cyclists...

As a walker she should take no responsibility for being aware of her surroundings in an area used by cyclists or dogs.

Why should she glance behind her every now & then while walking?

*Edit: How come nobody ever starts a thread moaning about the disk golf guys in Delta Park?! Im going to stop cycling, running & walking my dogs & start playing frisbee instead!!!

Yes I agree with her completely, their is just too much dog poo out there and a combined effort from runners, walkers, and cyclists should be taken to clean up the park.

We can all then walk, run, and cycle in peace

Mmmmm..........much as I support mutual support and use of all our parks and trails, surely dog poo is the sole responsibility of the dog owner!

In fairness, I have seen many dog walkers pick up their dogs' turds in the Delta Park.

Unfortunately just like cyclists - there are a few who give the rest a stinky name.
