do you think you do sleep deprivation training before the event...or...sleep as much as you can before the event?

My guess is that these type of individuals are people who suffer little sleep in general......just a guess.....

Hannele Steyn is about 70 km behind Hanlie Booyens. That's after a 140 km detour. She can still catch her ... GO Hannele!!

I support that fully....just hope the detour didn't take too much out of her.....

was thinking it through in trying to figure out how to train for something like this.

I mean desert dash was done in 2009, and that was done with 3 hrs to spare.

As you all know, Mr Back Marker, just in front of the wagon.

I am thinking more towards 250km/24hrs. Take off 5 hrs as a "proper" rest, add in two hours for rest at food stations, photo stops, swimming stops etc that leaves a 17hr day. Add in an extra hour for navigation issues then...

250/16 = 15.6 it up to to 16 km/hr.

Previous experience has shown that I can ride my mtn bike at 15 - 16 km/hr for many many hours on end no worries.

Do you guys think this is a good number to aim for over the course of 4 days ?

For once I was happy when my little girl was waking me up at all odd hours of the night... Grant smoked them last night, mechanical aside, I just really can't see this slipping away from him. The downhills towards the end too will really help him with recovering. He can literally wait two hours for John now and then hop on his bike a whole lot fresher (and just generally that bit faster)

Ladies race looks like it's going to be a humdinger of a finish - starting to think Hanlie's AR experience might edge this... but Amy still has the lead and Hannelle, well... A massive 'What if?' with that missed turn, she's made an amazing recovery from it, but sjoe that's gotta hurt!

, was kinda thinking it would add value (especially to the lurkers) to understanding what these guys go through.

I also did some research on this last year and the short answer I got was that you cannot really train for sleep deprivation . Some people just like to sleep more than others , but some people think that over loong period you can improve your ability to stay awake longer by changing your sleeping patterns etc .

I think you will find most of the racers on hardtails... you will also notice many without knobblies... 90% of this is Karoo dirt roads.

But yes, he is from another planet
