Am I the only guy that watched this years cape epic? I don't know if you guys have noticed but Nino and Phil where on 27.5 wheels and they won the stages that had the steepest and longest climbs and the most single track! I'm not saying the 27.5 are better than 29ers but I personaly think 27.5 can stay with a 29er on the flats. 29ers will smooth out the ride on the rough stuff but 27.5 can definitely beat a 29er in single track. I hear 27.5 are easier to tail whip ;)

Every one can ride what he like or can afford, but to answer the OP

How many bike is sold in South Africa in a year, maybe fifty to hundred thousand in 2012 just in the UK 2 Million bikes was sold?

Giant is the largest bike manufacturer in the world and I am sure they did some market research in Europe and America.

Remember South Africa is mostly marathon riding and Europe mostly Trail and  cross country riding.

From Single tracks survey in 2013

A couple weeks ago we asked mountain bikers to share their thoughts about the 27.5/650b wheel size and after crunching the numbers we put together this infographic to tell the story. We were shocked at the results and have come to the conclusion that not only are 27.5″ mountain bikes here to stay, they’re going to be even more popular than 29ers.

After talking about 27.5 for a couple years–will it, or won’t it take off–there are two trends emerging that lead us to the shocking conclusion that 27.5 will eventually take the largest share of the MTB market. The first trend is Trail/AM riding is becoming the type of riding most mountain bikers want to do (61% currently). Part of this is thanks to the improvement in equipment (lighter bikes) and also the fact that more aggressive–but ride able– trails are popping up all over the country (thanks IMBA!).

The second trend is toward specialized (lowercase) mountain bikes for different riding styles. We don’t know if it’s a powerful marketing message or just basic math driving this, but more than half of mountain bikers (51%) agree that 27.5″ mountain bikes are best for Trail/AM riding.

Add these two up and you get that the majority of riders like to ride Trail/AM and they agree that 27.5″ bikes are the best equipment for getting the job done. The number of mountain bikers who say the next bike they’ll purchase will be a 27.5″ (48%) confirms this.

I have one of each, no matter how fit I am I just cant get the 650 to climb as fast as the 29er. No matter how confident I am I just can't get the 29er to descend with as much flair as the 650. Neither will match how cool I look with the 26 SS!

can't get a 29er to ascend or descend as fasst as my 26er, therefore 650B

It will do a full circle and 26ers will be back in a while.

Ride what you like and is happy on.

No you are wrong, Mountain bikes will go away and we will all ride BMX's again.

I think Giant are going to be left with a 27.5" egg on their face in the near future.

Anyway, 26" for the small boys and 29" for the big men. 'Nuff said.

26" for the trail shredders and 29" for the tree huggers. get it?

What's the consensus on 27.5? Giant seems convinced... at least they are convinced that the will sell a lot.

I can see that the 27.5er / 650b has it's place on dual suspensions. I mean for a trail bike a 27.5 would make sense, as the 27.5 makes the bike more responsive and more like a 26".

But a 27.5 Hardtail race bike just doesn't make any sense at all. The 29er hardtail race bike would always be better than the 27.5 equivalent.

Personally, I think the manufacturers experienced a surge in sales with the 29er, and now that the 29er sales are slowing down they are thinking : "remember how many bikes we sold when we bought out 29ers? Let's do the 650b thing and get rich for the next decade. Then when that's done let's go back to 29er again."

I'm not convinced yet. I think the 27.5 is too much in the middle. With 26ers being phased out, the 29er and 650b will just be too close to each other IMO. It's way better to have a 29er racing bike and a 26er trail bike as a combo than a 29er and 27.5 combo?

Today is Friday. Yesterday was Thursday.

Doesn't apply in this country.
