Rude mountain bikers on illegal trails - Signal Hill, CT

To the douche-bag perpetrators: (to clear up some confusion)

Firstly, stop riding on illegal trails on Signal Hill/Lions Head. And secondly, don't swear at a female trail runner (my friend) who tells you to not ride there.

The story: This morning, my friend was running on the Lions Head trail (one where the steps are) that are clearly marked "no mountain biking" when a number of bikers sped past her as she was running. When told that they're not supposed to be there, one of them stopped and started swearing at her. Real classy.

Now, common courtesy would be to slow down and let the runner (who has a right to be there) get past.

Unfortunately she can't recall any identifying kit etc so you'll get away with it this time. Hopefully only this time.

I lived just below Pat Track/Single hill and walked my Dog up that path almost every evening.

I had no problem with the mountain bikers, as I see it the more mountain bikers the less muggers.some runners, not most have this entitlement issue.

We need to change our mindset, it is a public space, everyone should be able to enjoy, just respect each others sports, and ride/run/walk carefully on those tracks

Agreed i live just below Pats and i have been walking / running/ riding those trails for 20 plus years.  Its amazing how arrogant the trail runners have become. I can imagine that after getting abused by trail runners and their self importance the alleged abuser was gatvol and told lil miss where to go jump.  More people on the mountain equals a safer mountain.  So to the OP ask your mate if she will be unhappy when a mugger attacks her to see a bunch of bikers coming past??  Bet she wouldnt mind them then.

It seems mountain bikers (I am one, remember) have become a bit too self-righteous lately. You must bear in mind that those trails are for hikers and runners. Yes, some runners are arrogant and expect walkers to get out the way. But there is no logical way you can justify swearing at a runner WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO BE THERE.

The common sense thing to do is slow down and let the walker/runner past (if going in opposite direction) or ask nicely if heading in the same direction.

But I guess common sense isn't so common these days.

I'm all for sharing trails with other users but if the trail is clearly marked "no mountain biking" - surely the mtb'ers are the ones in the wrong?
