Hi all,

I am completely new to bike riding and need advice,

Preferably I would like to ride single track and a bit of technical stuff, but with adequate ability to do distances as well (based on my limited understanding, wine2whales, sani2c type of stuff)

I am looking at getting either a

PYGA OneTen29er with the following:

  • Sram X01 drivetrain (1x11)
  • Sram X1 shifter, derailleur and cassette 1x11
  • Rockshox Revelation RCT3 130mm fork
  • Rockshox monarch RT3 shock
  • Rockshox Reverb stealth 125mm dropper post
  • Sram Guide brakes

Or a Specialized  Comp Carbon

  • REAR SHOCK - Custom FOX Float CTD Evolution w/ AUTOSAG
  • FORK - FOX Float CTD Evolution 29
  • FRONT BRAKE - Shimano Deore BR-M506,
  • REAR BRAKE - Shimano Deore BR-M506BRAKE LEVERS
  • FRONT DERAILLEUR - SRAM X7, 10-speed,
  • REAR DERAILLEUR- Shimano XT Shadow Plus, 10-speed,
  • SHIFT LEVERS Shimano SLX- , 10-speed, trigger
  • CASSETTE  - SRAM PG 1030, 10-speed, 11-36
  • CHAIN - SRAM PC 1031, 10-speed,
  • CRANKSET - Custom SRAM S-1250

Based on your experiences, what do you recommend, I have read the reviews and have spoken to a few people, but still have no final answer.

Much appreciated

Personally I would go with the Pyga, the only problem that I see is that 1X11 can be a bit of a killer on new legs.

In my opinion you would end up having a lot more fun on the Pyga while the Spez would be a faster bike so I suppose it comes down to what you want to be doing on the bike.

The addition of the Dropper post is also a big plus in my books. I have been using my Reverb for 3 months now and it really does make riding a lot more enjoyable.

I have a pyga oneten, your setup looks amazing, I would recommend it all day every day. I have done the dusi2c (sani's small brother) and absolutely loved it. My main riding is trail in westerncape and KZN and it performs unbelievably well.

I ride an Epic and would easily recommend the Pyga from those options. The epic is a sorted bike with great handling but:

- The big thing about the epic is the brain which is not relevant in stage races as you don't do short sprints like on a XC course.

- The brain is a nuisance to keep serviced.

- 130mm is always going to be more versatile than 100mm because you can get compliant suspension without bottoming out on bigger hits.

- There is nothing timeless about an Epic because they are about stimulating sales so try and make the older ones seem obsolete. The Pyga stays the Pyga irrespective of the year model.

- Then you add the dropper post and the gap just widens even further.

How so?...

26/38 crank with 11/36 cassette provides the following gear ratios on the extremes:

26/36 0.72

38/11 3.45

X01as follows:

34/42 0.80

34/10 3.40

32/42 0.76

32/10 3.20

As you can see, X01 with a 32T chainring will provide just about the same ratio of gears as a 2x10 (26/38 with 11/36 cassette) - some will argue it's simpler as there's less superfluous gears within the range.
