Is there a standard for which side the front brake lever goes on?

Depends if your British or not, e.g. in the UK it is apparently illegal to sell a bicycle without the front brake lever on the right side. However, pretty much the rest of the world goes the other way round.

Is it that simple on a hydraulic system?

Have a good look at them, I know mine can be swapped over in a minute or two.

Not sure if that is the case with all types.

Most brakes will need to bled after swapping the hoses around.

 

Chat to your bikeshop and see if they would do it for you. Not that easy to DIY to be honest.

 

I run right = rear. It's the way I grew up with bikes. 

 

There is no right or wrong way.

The world would be so much simpler of all breaks were designed to run left or right.....Just swap the brake levers around with no fuss of potentially having to bleed brake systems.

I'm no bike mechanic but its not just a case of swapping them around unfortunately.

Actually it is really easy. If you are careful you don't even need to bleed the brakes after. Just loosen the hoses at the lever and swap them. Don't let the fluid run out.

That's the case with mine, interchangeable with no fuss.

Swapping is really easy - some systems need new olives/inserts. Only a minor bleed is needed.

 

Most bikes come with the hose bosses designed for right-rear. I run right-front.

 

My theory is that you use whatever your first bike came with!!

yes, its called "personal preference"

 

 

It's all down to personal preference.

 

Having the front brake on the left hand side makes more logic sense to me (as it's related to the front derailleur) and rear-brake with the rear-derailleur.

Listen to these oaks. They know what they are talking about. Cables can be cut & adjusted to suit.

I once borrowed a beautiful Giant Reign when I was down in Cape Town. Only realised the brakes were opposite way to mine when I grabbed a proper handful of "rear" just as I was hitting the switchbacks at speed... As I was dragging my bruised @ss back up out of the bushes I vowed to never ever ride a bike without rear on the right again.

It is personal preference.  My bikes are all rear brake on right (had to have a few swapped around).  Just make sure all your bikes are the same way around.  In an emergency situation, you may get confused if you have to think which side is which for the bike you're on!

Sram(in general) swaps around super easy by swapping the whole lever. Shimanos need to have the hoses disconnected and reconnected with the possibility of air getting in the system.

BTW if you had to ask the question you probably don't have a preference and just ride it standard with the back brake on the right hand. No offence, but guys that want it Moto style have been riding it that way for a long time and know that's what they want as the bikes don't come out the factory that way.

I just swapped my Shimano Alfine brakes to Moto style without a bleed being needed, but it's always a gamble.

Back on the left, and front on right. Im right handed, grab my water bottle with my right hand etc.. to have the front on the left side means I could go over the bars if i need to use it quickly.

 

Bike came the other way around, but I swapped it. Had it like this as a youngster on my first bikes and it feels more natural.

 

I dont ride moto, but funny enough also use my middle finger to brake with and not index.

I have right-front on my roadbike and right-back on my mtb. And that's how I like it. Weird I know.

My right hand is for the 'go-to' brake too!
