Ok guys i have  aquestion for those that have experience with longish travel forks.

i am busy building up my dream bike and am now faced with a decision on the front of the bike, do i go with the now slightly older RS pike with its tried and tested tech or the new fox float that has received some frankly awesome reviews?

for those interested here is what the build looks like:

SantaCruz Nomad CC frame with RS DebonAir ( looking at the aqua blue due to paint longevity)
Cane Creak headset ZS46/EC49
anodized red hope pro evo 2 hubs with a steel freehub
ZTR FlowEX 650b rims
Schwalbe Hans Damf Pacestar 27.5x2.35 rubber front and back.
64 spokes double butted with brass nipples
RS Reverb 31.6 150mm drop stealth
Shimano XT m785 brakes with 203mm and 180mm ICE Tech rotors
Shimano XT 11/34 casette
Shimano XT m780 shifter,
Shimano XT m786 clutch rear Deraileur
Shimano SLX 175mm Cranks
Kitted narrow Wide 34t 104BCD chainring- Anodized Red
Race face Turbine 3/4 riser 125mm bars
truative AKA stem, 60mm
Spank lock on grips.

at this point i am like a kid in a candy store and cant wait to ride this beast of a bike

that's one nice looking build you have there! Congrats. On the frok, have you considered the MRP stage fork at all? There's quite a bit of banter about it at present. Also reading the reviews, it rivals the Pike - not sure about the Fox though...

They are all just so damn good at the moment I would rather get the cheaper one and invest the money elsewhere (on the bike or other) I have ridden both and I prefer the Pike but that is purely based on value and looks.

Only REAL reason IMO why people go for the Fox 36 is to show off and have a big ePenis on the hub.

I'd go with a Pike.

  1. We KNOW it's good
  2. We KNOW it's reliable
  3. It will be quite a bit cheaper
  4. Chances are it's feel will be better matched / balanced with the Monarch rear
  5. RS SA's service is a good couple of miles ahead of Fox
  6. It'll be easier and cheaper to service yourself

Just check the Nomad's seatpost diameter. As far as I remember SC is 30.9mm, not 31.6.  Love my Pike, but can't comment on fox 36/MRP stage.

SC has changed from the 30.9 (which) is used on all their other bikes to the 31.6 on the Nomad to fit the 150mm travel Reverb (which comes only in 31.6)

I would have looked at the WTB KOM's rims as well, they are good priced and good weight in 25mm internal width

I would have run Hans Dampf trail star compound for front instead of Pacestart, or even Magic Mary trailstar front and Rock Razer rear.

34t front ring with 11-34t casette youre gonna need big legs... I would have run 11-36 casette with 42 big cog and 30 or 32t front ring.

O and I would have gone for the Pike as well..

hehehehe, ok looks like its going to be the pike, at this stage i am not sure how the bike will ride but as i am coming off a yeti SB66 to this i am hoping the weight loss and vpp linkage will make the 34-34 combination doable, if not i will need to change a few bits to accommodate the weakness, be it the cassette or a smaller NW up front.

from a tire perspective i have the HD pacestar on my yeti and absolutely love them. i am by no means going to win a downhill race on this beast and like the longevity offered by the HD pacestar. again will need to see if they suit my riding style on the new rig.

That FOX 36 plays with my heart strings and I like the way the previous generation RC2's worked.....also like the idea of running a 20mm and 15mm front axel option on the FOX.

Ja, it sounds like they've done a bit of work improving the small bump sensitivity as well, which in my opinion was always the Float 36's biggest draw back. Great on the big stuff, not so much on the smaller stuff. Nou ja, time will tell.

I have a santa cruz nomad c with a fox 36 and a new reign with a pike. Pike looks better, fox rides better IMO. why does everyone get stuck on ztr rims. They honestly not that good. Have a bit of imagination. WTB make much better rims amd so does e thirteen and spank. Also. Im running 32tooth amd 11-36 cassette and i cannot do all the hills. And besides, you not going to buy this bike and do long distance stuff so why do you need to go fast on flats. 30 tooth with 11-36.nomads aren't meant to go uphill. Trust me.

Off topic but why not Enve rims?

because i havent won the euro lotto!!!

also i do not like the deep section carbon. a mate has them on his 26" nomad and just trying to find a tube with a long enough valve is an issue. trying to do a tubeless conversation on them is hugely expensive as well. i know valve extenders etc are all ways around this but it just adds to the schlep, for me i want to ride not struggle to find parts and then struggle some ore to get them to work for me.
