Looking for a fork for my new build, and it seems no online South African store stock 26" forks, especially the ones with a large amount of travel...

Any ideas? Recommendations?

Requirements

Tapered

15mm thru axle

Budget around 5k.

And if you do have a suggestion would you know where to get one? If I import one off say CRC I will be paying ludacris amounts to get it here

www.ebay.co.uk  is also an option if you know of any family or friends that are visiting the UK and can bring it back.

CRC will charge you R235.00 delivery and it should arrive within 10 days. You'll pay a clearance fee of R37.00 and the SA VAT on the fork only (No VAT charges on the CRC delivery charge)

I know if its a component you wont pay import duties, but not sure how they classify a fork.

http://www.dutycalculator.com/will be able to tell you.

Hope this helps.

I went through the same process (struggle) a while back. 26" long travel forks are like hens teeth to find in this country. I eventually found a fork at a LBS but that was pure luck.

Like the others have said, get hold of Bibi, from Zion Bikes, cool guy does his best to help.

Thanks for the replies.

Will drop him a message and see what he can do...

Trying to avoid shipping it in as if I can get it locally I can probably get more bang for my buck.

As for steerer length, not sure, it's going on a Yeti SB66 probably.

Going to give a crack at a shops also, my mate also picked one up by pure luck but it seems as we go on 26" is a dying bread in this country making our lives hell!

5k? Good luck... Fox, RS or Manitou you're looking closer to 10. And the rest.

You may find something on a CRC firesale if you're lucky.

I don't get the anti 26er sentiment at most shops at the moment - plug for the trail head here as they still seem to have 26er stuff and don't immediately tell you to buy a new bike. My brother in law couldn't buy a new tyre for his bike recently, he was about to order online and then got lucky with a takeoff. Shops seemed confused that he might not want to buy a whole new bike because he got a sidewall tear. Its madness.

I for one have a conspiracy theory. I wonder if this isn't a scare tactic on the part of the importers to force the change. Strangle the 26er market long enough and they'll all buy new bikes. Its not like WTB and others aren't still making 26er stuff its just that the importers are refusing to bring it in. I've heard statements like "there's too little interest". Have they ever heard of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Call me crazy but if you look at the current state of things it just seems too convenient. "Sorry we can't sell you a new wheelset but if you'll come over here we've got the 2015 Trance 27.5".

If you've got a tapered steerer (which I don't) you'll probably find you can just use a 650b fork and future proof yourself. Much as I hate that you'll be playing right into the hands of those who are forcing the change this might be your best option.

I have a Sector Tk and apparently I can remove the bump stops in it to increase my travel to 150mm. So pretty stoked about that.

There is still a huge market for 26" spares etc, and I have to agree, it seems as if bike shops, probably more the distributors who are forcing the trend.

I remember a few years ago when I was looking to buy, I couldnt find anything with more than 120mm travel and 2 years prior to that there were plenty. Everything revolves around XC

Wow... from having no forks to having a selection of them!

Pm'd everyone and weighing up all the options. It seems a lot of people have a lot forks.

Don't understand what bike shops are thinking with not stocking this stuff, if anything they are becoming more popular as more people are doing more extreme things...

And they look at you strangely when you say you want a 26" anything
