when I had the water tested the oke at the pool place told me there was no (zero) chemicals in the water.

initial chemicals included

2l acid

5kg chlorine

2kg Algaecide

4kg (2 batches) Aluminium Sulphate (settling salts)

4kg of Soda Ash to fix ph after settling salts

1 bottle of filter cleaner

1 bottle of sparkle it

1 packet of stabilizer

1 bottle black algae killer

I also replaced the pool cleaner and all pipes.

did the pump last week and now for the sand

Dont need new sand. Just clean the existing sand.

Open the top, put filter on backwash, switch pump on. Stir with a broom handle or your hand. Youll get wet and dirty but will save yourself a R1000. If you have a air compressor switch it on and use the air hose to bubble the crap loose. You can even have a jacuzzi pump fitted to the sand filter to help clean it as a more long term solution without having to get dirty.

I own a 32 000L koi pond and use to have a sand filter on it which i had to do that weekly.

This is an article i wrote many years ago for the KoiSA magazine. In this folder is a pdf.

and 4 bags?? i used spare building sand i had last time i did it and it wasnt that much of a schlep...I just took all the scummy sand on the top out and the backwashed with it open as others have recommended and then topped up with new sand. Pool guys tell you, you need to replace it once a year because they are trying to make a few bucks thats all

Any of your local "pool Team" stores will sell it to you for R75 / 40kg bag, chances are good you wont need more than 3 bags. Over filling the filter is a very bad idea as you end up with the extra sand finding its way into all sorts of places (bearings, seals etc) as it tries to escape.

I did mine recently, TWICE, after doing it the first time and being ultra careful when filling it, I was getting sand pushed back into the pool, after 2-3 backwash cycles it was still doing it, decided to empty it the second time and found that one of the plastic "fingers" on the bottom end had snapped off.

The local pool guy wants to smoke me R900 to change the sand (the sand works out at around R400 for 4 bags)

We were recommended by our pool care company (a very well known one here in Sandton) to change the sand in our filter.

We had a contract with them to sort out our pool once a week but weren't too happy with their work. Our pool always had a green tinge and algae formed on the sides no matter what I did.

We raised this with them on a number of occasions and they finally told us that we should have the sand changed in the filter. They quoted R1,000.00 to do the job and cart away the old sand. We agreed. Both busy. Worth the cost.

The week after, they assured us that they had, indeed done the deed.

It didn't work though. Pool was still a bitch to keep clean and the cost of the chemicals to prevent it from going green was astronomical (we'd even drained the water).

Anyway, we told them to take their service and shove it.

A week or two later we drained the pool and had it re-gunited by a pool guy who lives in our estate.

He also checked the filtration system and called me from my office (I'm fortunate to work from home) and showed me the sand in the filter. It was foul and smelled like a corpse.

It most definitely hadn't been changed  :cursing:

Lying, thieving, bastard employees of this really well known pool service. And they wouldn't accept any responsibility whatsoever

*Edit: removed name of "Pool Care" company.

update.

i opened the top of the filter last night to try and "wash" the sand as per Joe's post above.

the sand in the filter smells like something died in there and is almost rock solid for 2 thirds, I managed to break up some of the clumps but its nasty and my stomach ain't that strong.

i also discovered another shortcut the previous took with pool maintenance and have to replace the filter lid and O ring which was so siliconed to the filter that it broke when I tried to take it off.

due to being at the coast and while busy with it i decided to replace all the screws. the local pool place wants R95 for the 12 screws. went to the bolt and nut shop got the same thing for R20, which means the bulk of pool shop's branded screws' price is for packaging

Hit that sand with a couple of cups of clorine before you stick your hand in it - leave it overnight.

A pressurewasher also breaks up the sand nicely before you remove it.

R95 for 12 Stainless would still be ok, but standard steel bolts is a total rip off.

I need to do this next weekend.

Where is pool sand R75 a bag?  I've only seen it for R200ish.

I bought it for R75 from a pool shop in edenglen called RIAAN POOL. They are a franchise but not sure if there are any in your side of town.

Hi guys,

I know it is a bit late but it is also a good idea to mask off the screw holes in the filter because it is a bugger to clean the holes once they are full of sand.

Regards

Sarge

I learnt that lesson long ago. I now just put the screws back into the holes while removing/replacing the sand.

ARGH I need advice and No I don't want to fill my pool in with sand.

In January I got a bubble cover for my pool and it worked like a dream wrt heat and saving water. Winter came and I removed the cover because all it was doing was collecting leaves and making compost out of them. A couple months back I put it back on. Now my pool is big and my kids are small so when we swim I remove the net only half way and then roll the bubble cover up also just half way. Not long after putting the bubble cover back on I notice that the creepy doesn't move much, my theory is the resistance from the bubble cover won't allow it to move. I have put some weights on the hose to lower it in the water and it helps but still not perfect like without the cover. 3 weeks ago I remove the bubble cover because lack of rain is making it so dirty and it doesn't look nice so I wanted to try rinse it in the pool. Then I see the bottom of my pool is filthy. As soon as we started swimming and disturbed all the dirt my pool went green. I tested my water and all was good. But 3 weeks later it's still green despite, floculent and blue this and anti green that. I took a sample to the pool shop this week and they also tested it. Told me exactly what I knew, on paper, my water is perfect. The guy asked how much the pump runs, when I told him basically 24/7 he was shocked. He said change the sand, I said its just over a year old but ok. Then he says how big is my filter. I tell him it's a 3 bag, he laughs and tells me it's too small and so is my pump. Quotes me R6k for a bigger pump(1.1kw), filter(5 bag) and sand. I'm In 2 minds. The guy that did my bubble cover told me the same thing but I just assumed he was trying to get some more work out of me.

So 2 questions, How do I get my creepy to operate better under the bubble cover and is a 3 bag filter and 0.75kw pump too small for +-120 000 Litres?

My logic tell me the size of the pump doesn't matter. It is just going to have to run for a longer time to circulate the entire volume of water in the pool.
