Interesting that my question didn't make it past the moderators....

It is fine to say that weather conditions will play a part, but we have paid a lot of money for the entry and would like to know what the organisers have done to take local knowledge and the starting point of long running events like the platinum mile into account... my question wasn't that unreasonable?

Paul Wolff

Like any place along the coast - Westerly wind will make sea rough, Easterly will make it flat.

Comment From Gary

What are sea conditions like at the venue? What can out of towners expect?

Paul Wolff

Like any other IRONMAN event the swim is weather dependent and swim will be adapted to suit conditions.

Comment From Gerry

Hi Paul, what contingency plans do you have in place for swim, local knowledge suggests swim start location is extremely temperamental

I'm not sure Paul's answer about the wind is correct. The north-easterly in Durban brings the unpleasant white water choppy conditions. The westerly is the wind that smooths out the sea (creating the best waves for surfing for example). What he may have meant is that bigger surf is synonymous with the westerly. However, I think most people would prefer to swim in the westerly as they aren't gulping chunks of water every time they breathe.

Sad if no swim as this is my strong discipline but athlete safety is paramount. No use worrying about it now ...just like the weather and wind ...it will be what it will be...

EL we switched sides of the road. What is the standard rule in SA?

Keep ..... Pass ......?

EL switch was as a result of the roadworks on the N2

SA standard on 70.3, keep left pass right

IM keeps to international standard keep right pass left

I'll be doing a surf swim this weekend, just hope there's nothing trapped on this side :whistling:

Also looks as though surf conditions are improving next week.

Swam at North Beach this morning, went out in the middle of the piers. Felt like I was swimming on the spot for a while, but made it out. Once behind the back line it was nice smooth water. Did an in out again at the end. Just hope it's not any bigger on race day.

The other way around, in town on the left, once you got on the NEX it was on the right

Which way was wind blowing?

Which way was wind blowing?

It was blowing from the south west, the usual wind that brings the rain. Conditions on Sunday are supposed to be similar to today, and sea conditions look pretty good today. Wind is meant to be a light north east which will make the return leg on the bike a pleasure.

cheers, yes rather headwind on way out than on way back...  Lets hope you right about conditions, with a North Easter I guess if it is any more than light breaze we can expect a fair bit of chop.

Yeah I mentioned the same thing a while back when I first saw that.

West makes it smooth and clean where east makes it choppy and dirty.
