A bit banged up..

A magic ride on local green belt trails ended in a  very painful experience on Sunday evening. I have been working on a high speed jump - ie working on riding the thing not actually building it. Its at the bottom of a fast steepish track and is not really a jump at all. Its an earth mound graded into place to prevent vehicles using the dirt road lower down to drive further up onto a piece of open land.

It has a very indistinct lip, if you can call it that and is covered with long grass. Two previous attempts on other rides went well - got  height and great distance - landing results in a classic puff of dust and that woohoo! feeling:-).

I hit the thing at just under 40kph if Strava can be believed. My timing was  out and the dreaded dead sailor ensued. I had just enough air time time to think about the painful experience that was coming when I smacked the ground very hard.

I have a stem shaped bruise on my tummy below my ribs, bruised ribs ( bar maybe)a grazed and badly bruised back/ shoulder and a few other more minor grazes as well as a dinged helmet and slightly sore noggin. It was extremely painful at the time - one of those I cant breath and wondering whats broken situations. Luckily no serious head trauma and no concussion or broken bones. My cheap Etto helmet worked as it should and my Dakine back pack seems to have saved my spine area from any serious injury.

2 days on and with the right wound dressings my work shirt is not sticking to my back and the myprodols are keeping the aches at bay. I feel lucky i didn't end up in hospital.

Check list for future rides:

1. Concentrate properly;

2. Moderate my speed to assist with timing on teh jump;

3. Check suspension settings before a ride - my rear rebound was 2 clicks faster than where I normally ride it for jumps;

4. Maybe take a spade and give the yump a proper take off and lip that is visible..

The difference between a fun opportunity for air time and a properly built and safe jump is huge. Be careful out there chaps...

Had a very similar experience, timing/speed/rebound all off/incorrect...

I didn't know what day it was.. Lol..

another thing to remember for next time: a video of the incident.

bet it would have made for an epic crash video.

Sorry, not to hijack the thread, but ask and you shall receive....  I still cringe...

I found that a visit to a pump track works wonders for confidence and learning... Also, if you are able to and have a shock, lock out the back.. Takes the rebound factor away to start with until you are comfortable with the other components of the jump...

Find a jump and start slow, run it many times after one another and speed up a bit each time, when you feel comfortable with the previous speed..

All this is of course IMHO..

Edit... Oh, and youtube skills vids are awesome..

Had to cut the video short though, many four letter words after that... :whistling:  :whistling:

Looks like the tail kicked you and you landed front heavy flinging you otb. Love the bit where you can see the bike floating get on its own in the air while you're eating dirt. Sweet footage, I never seem to be using my GOpro when I slam.

Ja, rebound at the back was full, so just jack in the boxed me over the bars.. Landed on the 'nose' of the front wheel...  Was still early days in my MTB career, just went too big too fast without the knowledge..

There is a frame that I grabbed a pic from, my hands out stretch towards my bike that is in the air and sky behind it, kinda like I'm gesturing "come back bike, don't leave me bike" and the bike is just like, "I must go, my people need me"..

Now take the Garmin data (you can export the GPX from strava as well), add the gopro clip into the Garmin Virb software and lets see the speed + Heartrate.

This sounds interesting, gonna have to try it... But alas no HR... But it would have been around 300bpm at the top of the jump and then flat lined for a few seconds after :ph34r:  :ph34r:

Seriously though, will try find the ride and merge with vid, was some time ago...
