Rather EAT REAL FOOD - before, during and after.

.

Keep a goo or 2 handy (with caffeine) in case you bonk...

yip, totally agree. trail mix, banana(even comes in its own eco friendly packaging), peanut butter sami....hell I have even made nutella and banana hotdogs.

Also agree on carrying a grenade...its for absolute emergencies.

I have tried three of four of the different brands and I cant say that I have really felt a difference.

I cant even feel the difference between the expensive brands and oros...thank goodness my body is cheap that way.

High 5 for me. I bought a tub.

at R500 - R550 a pop it seems expensive but you must remember it's a 2.2kg tub which could be double the size of other brands.

I trialed several brands in packets before deciding on high 5.

For me high 5 has a refreshing taste.

It's not sweet and doesn't have a funny after taste like some other brands.

If you do decided to go with a tub just double check the expiry date.

You going to want something that's not going to expire in the next few months.

Been using Cytomax for a couple years now. Nice flavours (Pomegranate and Tropical Fruit  ) and it's always done the job in getting me home in one piece. Never given me the nausea or stomach issues often associated with energy drinks. The only times the wheels have really fallen off is when I have run out. I'm allergic to something in Powerade and Energade, so waterpoints at races are often not much help. It also comes in nice single serving sachets, so you can try out the flavours before hitting your wallet for a large tub.

Not the cheapest, but you can often grab a 2kg tub at Dischem on special for around R350, which lasts me a good few months. For training I just use a hint of it with water, while for races I'll take a mix of it and a bottle of water along to alternate between.

Other item I would recommend is Rehidrat, certainly always felt it works for me - often have a glass the night before a race (not the sport version of obvious reasons), carry a sachet for long rides, and will often have a glass after a big ride to aid recovery. Still prefer the old non-sport sachets, but the new bulk sport bags are certainly better value for money.

Coke and water... along with a couple gels, potatoes and salt, it's what gets 90% of Comrades runners to the finish line

Energade (buy the concentrate, very cheap) in one bottle, water in the other.

Eat baby potatoes, and sometimes just enerjellies if the ride is short.

GU on tough rides.

Training: Just enough Powerade/Energade to give the water some flavour + bananas.

Racing short: FiT CarboTrain - no solid food

Racing long: SingleTrackFuel until 4 hours then the red ambulance (50/5- coke/water) + half a banana every hour.

Do yourself a favour and find out your bodies carb absorption rate (it varies on body weight - google it) then add that many carbs per hour. Waaaay more important than which brand you use.

For value for money go with Game powder, otherwise Cadence Nutrition is very good and PowerBar is the best of the lot... So take you pick.

I am in two minds what to try next. I have heard great things about powerbar and cadence, but nothing about PVM, why is that? Are their products any good?

I agree however it is getting frightfully expensive.

thats cause your using the wrong kind of coke :whistling:

half a bottle of tap fridge water from home and a can of coke at less than 10 bucks beats any commercially available product in price. as for effectiveness, it works very very well!!!

better or worse than others i cant say but for what it is it is unbelievable how well it does what it does.

Brands are irrelevant and brands make tons of cash based on exactly your statement.

Give your body water and carbs you need per hour (my rate is 40g/hour and I weigh 80kg) and you're 95% of the way there.

The other 5% is what works for you. Which products give you the runs, which products make you feel nauseous etc.

These oxygen boosted, anti cramp VO2 max improver anti cramp magical powders provide tiny tiny tiny gains at rather large prices.
