RAVE: Human kindness at its finest

What started off as a pretty routine Saturday morning roll with my parents nearly ended in disaster this past weekend.

On the way back from a very chilled ride, my dad started to feel huge pains in his chest about half way up Suikerbossie. He stopped, fearing that he was having a heart attack as he couldn't breathe or turn the pedals.

I was unaware of what was going on behind me as I was ahead by a couple of minutes chatting with a few friends on the way up. After waiting for about 20 minutes just over the crest of Suikers, I decided to head back down and see what the hold up was. I saw my mom coming up the other side with tears in her eyes and a look of panic spread across her face. She informed of what happened and how she had tried to wave down two police cars, but they had simply sped past her without giving her or my dad a second look.

She then instructed me to head back into town to go and fetch a car and while she waited with him and tried to contact ambulances and hospitals.

While I was making my way back to town, a guy who we had chatted to earlier in the day, at the top of Chappies, came across my parents in their state of need and forced my dad into the car and drove him into Camps Bay so that I could pick him up.

While riding through Sea Point, a guy in Olympic Kit, riding a Black Spade Roadie started chatting to me, and upon finding out what was going on, helped drag me through Sea Point at a blistering pace so that I could fetch my car and get my dad to the nearest hospital where the emergency team was waiting at the ready.

To these two absolute awesome humans, I extended my greatest thanks, your kindness will not be forgotten.

To cut a relatively long story short(er), my dad has pulled through fine, but I can't help but think what would have happened if these two guys had not helped, as the difference between life and death is literally a matter of minutes, sometimes seconds.

So again, thank you guys.

P.S I want to apologise to any people I may have pissed off for shooting a couple of red robots on my way home, but it was for a good cause.

Every so often someone helps restore a little faith in people.

there are a lot of them out there, people by nature are just much  "happier"/eager to carry over the moaning and bad news, most of the good deeds fall through the cracks

Fudge. Now you made me cry. Just thinking of the time my dad had a heart attack on the bicycle. Just glad my mom knew what to do.

But not a thing you see anymore. Everyone is on their own mission these days

My dad had 3 heart attacks, the last one killed him a couple of years back. He got me into cycling all those years back because after his first one, his doctor told him to get a bike and ride. Glad your dad is ok and hope he has a long, strong life!

Glad to hear it ended well, and big ups to the good guys. Really though, I'd write a loooong letter to the Hout Bay & Camps Bay police station commanders
