Cyclist down in Camps Bay

Is this ride strictly for PPA members, or can anyone join in the ride as a sign of unity? Does this also mean that you will not be allowed without the new jersey?

PPA is an inclusive organisation (you just don't get seeded at funrides  ) so all are welcome.

However, we would prefer to show the world a united front when it comes to cycling safety and the new jersey with the "Stay wider of the rider" message will become more recognisable to motorists to #staywider when they see it on the roads.

The ride is open to all, please register at https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?eid=3343to buy a jersey and then join the ride with full support, medics, traffic police and water points. For free. And visibly show your support for safer roads.

So, do I understand you to say that everyone is welcome to join the ride subject to them wearing the new jersey?

As an Awareness Ride for safe cycling subsidised in full by the PPA Safe Cycling Campaign we would prefer you to wear the #staywider jersey. You don't have to be a member of the PPA.

Jerseys will be on sale on the day and are available every day from the PPA offices or online at https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?eid=3348.

See you there.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I must pose the question differently - Will I be allowed to join the ride without the PPA jersey? Yes or No? Dankie

An interesting example of the mindset of bus drivers occurred this morning as I had an informal chat with a Golden Arrow Bus driver through the window of her drivers cab.  Prior to this chat I had been riding down Durban Road, direction Rondebosch Common, at around seven am.  So I hear a bus approaching from behind, it sounds close; it is close - close enough to force me onto the gutter section for safety.  As I watch it barrel through a fresh red traffic light a second Golden Arrow bus performs the exact same maneuver, I scuttle into the gutter for safety, and the bus screams to a halt ten meters away in front of me at the red light.

So I ride up alongside the drivers cap and ask the black female driver if it makes sense to force a cyclist into the gutter only to stop almost immediately at a red light?

She nods yes.

I then asked her if she was aware of the bus/truck/dead cyclist incident in Camps Bay?

She answered yes.

I again asked if it makes sense to endanger a cyclists life for a few meters to which she answered - and I quote "Yes it makes sense because you guys drive on the road."

Scum of the earth... Just occurred to me that an interview like this would be great on video and on FB etc. Drivers with this mentality should be fired.

This is exactly the problem I have encountered, with other motorists also.....

They are under the impression that we do not belong on the road, but PPA spends huge amounts on 1.5m etc

I keep saying that signs should be put up on the side of the road educating drivers that cyclist HAVE ride on the road, and also that it is NOT a privilege but a requirement by LAW for cyclist to ride on the road.

EXCEPT when there is a dedicated cycle lane.

A cyclist came 'speeding' inbetween the middle of the 2 lanes of traffic on Marine Drive close to Woodbridge Island heading into town. This is in peak traffic (+- 7:20am), when there is a perfectly good cycle lane right next to the road. What an idiot.

On my merry way home today, 5 cops on motorcycles next to me...

Suddenly a car pulls out of a parking in front of me without signal almost hitting me, and then proceed to stay in front of me so that i could not pass on the left in the yellow lane....cops see this, just carry on.

Now how do we expect the public to obey the law if cops won't even apply it to guilty as sin motorists? These same cops proceeded to jump an already red light.

It feels like we are wasting our time, breath and efforts.

Cannot answer for the PPA, but I rode the awareness ride the past 2 years wearing my own non-PPA jersey and I was made to feel just as welcome as everyone else.

I'm afraid all the awareness rides won't change motorist attitudes until we have some convictions. Let's start with golden arrow and my citi

The only way this works out well is when the law sides with cyclists and pedestrians by providing absolute protection. If a car hits a pedestrian or cyclist then they are assumed guilty and can spend the weekend in a cell with a 28

I've thought for 19 hours on how to answer you in a simple yes or no as clearly your common sense cannot read between the lines.  So I'll spell it out for you.

PPA has arranged this ride in a part of Cape Town that has no other organised rides apart from the CTCT, has paid the traffic department for their attendance, has bike marshals in attendance, has a paid safety officer, has sign off from the authorities as required by law, has water points and medical staff. So PPA has treated this Awareness Ride as a full blown event. But it's not timed. And it's completely free.  All that is asked is that the participants wear the new PPA STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER lumo jersey to show a united campaign.

Would you join, say, the 99er and ride with a racing bunch that has paid to enter the event without actually entering yourself?  Nothing stops you doing this, except your conscience,

Put you money where you mouth is, do something positive to show you support the campaign to increase motorist's awareness of giving cyclists more respect on the road.  How do you honestly expect motorists to respect us cyclists if you want to join the launch ride for the "Stay wider of the rider" Safe Cycling Initiative but want to undermine it by not wearing the same jersey as 500 other participants to show a united front?

The fact that this conversation is taking place on a thread about the late 70 year old Roy Smith shows how much work still needs to be done.  Every death of a cyclist on our roads in unacceptable. My team and I are trying to something about that so that we don't need threads like this.

Saw the same on Constantia Road near the Shopping Center the other day - road bikes - straight through a red while I was turning right in my car on green. Not even close to an accident, just stupid. Still I'd like to know how many cyclists are ever injured or killed because of this kind of thing - I bet not many. Its teh cars side swiping or hitting bikes from behind that cause the real problems...
