Tokai after the fire

Careful in there under those gums, they aren't called widow-makers in Aus for nothing. They will shed their branches if they have been burnt, and I have seen some big branches been shed.

dean, they don't need to have been burnt to shed their branches... Several have already shed over the time that I've been in Tokai. No warning either. Just an almighty crack and thud.

How long did it take? Don't think I was in the MTB scene when the fire happened.

2 years before Neverending Story was re-opened.....

We really could do without advertising the fact that a guy that was asked not to go up there, because parks don't want people in there while it isn't safe, chose to ignore the request and go anyway.
All it will do is make our dealings with parks more difficult and possibly slow down our return and Trail building.

I guess that the more people that make it to trail build days, the faster the trails would be open :whistling:

Large numbers of people is exactly what fire and rescue services and sanparks do not in Tokai right now. Think of tokai as a third degree burns victim. First thing is to stabilise the victim, then keep her alive. The process of healing must begin and be well entrenched because visitors are allowed. Any emergency interventions need to be administered by specialists. Then once our victim is stable and recovered and out if danger of infection can we start letting visitors in.

It's going to be around a year before any trail work is allowed so make peace with that now. How the slopes settles after this winters rains is super critical to the healing and rejuvenation of that landscape.

Consider it strictly out of bounds for the fore see able future. After fire 2000 parts of tokai and the whole of silvermine south slope were out of bounds for minimum 12 months. Silvermine south has never been reopened for mtb.

Consider a road bike and adding some energy to stay wider of the rider for the next year.

Apologies from me too, I could have worded that better. I wasn't having a pop at you but rather the imbecile that took the pictures.

No worries, no offense taken.. :) You are very right though if people were asked to stay away then they should...

Not sure tbh but i think it's only tokai that's closed cos of the plantation.

Will try to confirm though. Still pretty silly.

That's my guess too but probably best to check first.

You have an incredible amount of rational thought, so much it's scary! Thanks for adding this very clear perspective.

..and thanks for everyones understanding so far. You are all right, moving through the Park when we have been requested to remain clear will only add frustration to an already stressful situation. Parks have made it clear that they will not hesitate to make examples of people who think the restricted access does not apply to them. It will be a shame and again end in an unnecessary disgruntlement.

TokaiMTB has been added to the emergency crew list and in time will begin surveying the damage. We are quite happy to post pics of the area but please; horse riders, cyclists walkers, hikers, joggers trail runners, even dragging yourself on your bum counts as access, are required to stay out of the park.

Cape Pine will asses the tree damage and provide a new schedule and following discussions, decide on what the best solution will be. In the meantime, flare-ups and underground fires will slowly be extinguished or left to subside by themselves. Sinkholes and boulders the size of small cars breaking loose are two more hazards that are not considered but have the potential for great personal harm. There have been very few injuries during the worst of the fire, it would be a waste to have people being injured now.

Please could TokaiMTB have as much support during the next few months to try to adhere to TMNP's request and also when we get closer to presenting and finding approval for a new trail network, help with any kind of financial support. Table Mountain National Park are looking for a world class facility and the mountain biking community are the conduit to getting what they, and ultimately WE want.

I need sleep, Myles, Mark, you guys still coughing?
