So.... this will be my first "off" season and would like some advise as to how to tackle it.

Goal for next year is to race as high as I can personally, hopefully this would be VA/A , B can also do

How do I tackle this off season to ensure that i come out with enough improvements to race in this category come next season.

Tnx

There is no off season in SA, I see so many cyclists start training 6 weeks before Argus or 94.7..... its better/easier to stay on top of your game the whole year round. Before we hear about overtraining, I trained hard ( just below Blood lactate threshold) almost every day for over 4 months and was in the best shape of my life. Winter training is the key to summer performance. we are not Euro pros that have specific races in mind, we want to race every weekend.

Understood ,

So you say just continue as I have and do some IDT when weather prevents it?

A few ideas:

Whatever you do, don't set performance goals other than fun, relaxation, adventure

This will allow for mental freshness and physical recovery

Swim

Chill

Run

Chill

Gym

Chill

Mountain biking

Chill

Sauna

Chill

Coffee rides

Chill

If you wanna improve you're seeding, join some faster / higher seeded riders from July onwards and roll with them to hopefully raise your performance.

Agreed. My goal for last year was a race a month. And glad I was able to keep it up through winter cause I got to 947 and was easily ready. While all my friends were stressing to do last minute training.

We are fortunate here in SA that winter is only too cold to ride in the morning. By mid morning the weather is perfect.

Have a look at the Lights By Linea racing which is short high intensity riding for all levels. It's criterium events. www.lblmyevents.co.za

First race is this weekend Saturday and then Sunday

Define "off season". Training at just below LT for 4 months is 1/3 of the year. What intensity do you keep up for the rest?

Periodization is widely accepted by top coaches and sport scientist. You can't go hard all year. Some examples of authoritive coaches/scientists: Phil Maffetone (coached tri legends Mark Allen and Mike Pigg), Joe Friel and Tim Noakes (no, not only famous for diet programs  ) all promote periodization whereby you train all year round, but at definite different intensities and focus'.

Personally, I'll come to a great crash with illness/injury if I try to keep high intensity up for too long.

It's never too cold to ride, just a bad dresser!

HAHA well that makes the whole point.

Last year we did a road race at the cradle in July.  We had to slow down on the downhills cause it was "too cold".  Enjoyed the uphills as a chance to warm up :D

so you want to "RACE" VA, well take a 2 week active recovery i.e. ride every other day at z2 or RPE of 4'ish. Then Start your base phase of 3/4 months that's riding at Z2 for 3-4hours at a time, maybe longer on weekends, then add your intentsity round about August/early September then do your first race in Spring League.
