Two Triathletes was taken down whilst going up on Franshoek Pass (Villiersdorp to Franshoek direction- around 10am). A mini buss was travelling to fast down those hairpin bends and could not make it, the bus flipped (lost control) as they where passing. Lucky a third cyclist could avoid being hit. It is carnage at the scene with bodies all over the place. One was alive and in pain as i passed but i cannot confirm about the other. Passenger bodies where scattered all over the place.

Was it a minibus? I read reports that the bus had to swerve out for the cyclists cutting the corner?

Also heard this. Two very conflicting versions of the incident.

CAPE TOWN – Western Cape emergency officials say this morning’s bus crash along the Franschhoek Pass occurred after the driver swerved to avoid hitting a cyclist on the road.

Latest details have been confirmed that three men have been killed after the bus, carrying 29 passengers, went off a cliff.

Two of those killed were rugby players travelling as part of a team from Groendal on their way to a match in Grabouw.

26 people were rushed to various hospitals in Paarl, Stellenbosch and Cape Town.

Two cyclists were also involved in the crash.

Their emotional coach Archie Johnson who is also on the scene says he can’t believe what happened.

“What happened here today, especially from the players and the spectators from Franschhoek Rugby Club, because the players and spectators they went to Grabouw to watch and play rugby. It is a tragedy for our rugby club.”

Provincial EMS spokesman Darren Francis says, “It appears the cyclist cut corners and the bus had to swerve to miss him but it was obviously too late, the bus rolled, the bus came to land on its roof.”

Poor families, not good for any involved.

I am sure speed also had a part to play

why can't this be the fault of the cyclist alone?

Besides, with a bus full of ppl, you dont need much speed. Momentum alone can cause loss of control, especially under sudden evasive maneuvres?

If the traveling speed of the vehicle was within the limits, maybe the driver would've been able to pass the cyclists and not overturn his bus. That pass is often used by cyclists. Consideration consideration consideration! We are all allowed to use the roads!

Strange comments from ems. Both parties was travelling in opposite direction. It happenend on a hairpin bend. easy cop out to blame cyclist, they passed me 5min before the incident and they where riding single file behind one another. I however did not see it happen but a third cyclist was lucky not to be involved.sad to hear about the casulties...

its an easier cop out to blame the driver. lets wait for the facts before passing the blame. But this is thehub: why let the eventual truth get in the way of a good flaming...
