Why are they going so slowly?  It looks faaaaaar too slow for that gradient.  Plus looks pretty flat at the bottom?

Weeding out the slackers from the pack early on

For 20km?

6.1 kph, that is barely above walking pace.

yip, that pace is about right when I saw him trundling up that hill, probably would have been quicker if his partner rode ahead and then ran down to fetch the other bike and ridden that up AND still would have waited

Yep the dude in the red top needs a coke to wash all that dirt down...

It amazes me how you spend a LOT of time on the bike, never mind the cash to be there but somehow can't ride a section like that, I know that the camera cannot do it justice but come on...let go of the brakes and let the wheels roll...

If you plonk that badly in the first 20km can you imagine the rest of the course?

check out the attachments for a different angle if the dude with the red top

I say again, photos never do the terrain justice, but, it just doesn't look that tricky...

I'd reserve judgement about this little piece of ST until after riding it. Maybe not the first 80% now that it's been manicured, but the exit bit is still pretty raucous.

Oh it is so easy to say this and that (while sitting in my office, air con blowing away all my farts), but being out there, there is another story at play.

Respect to all the people doing the Epic.  I am not able to do the ride and I am not going to say you should do this and should do that.  Heck I know I lack most skills to even pass the start line.

Good luck to all doing the Epic.  Hope you all have a great ride ahead of you.

Respect to those guys doing the Epic - they are FAR fitter than me - and I would die a slow painful death .... but I cant believe this ... looking at the video I could have believed it to be a bit more hectic than it seems, but looking at this pic above in high def ... Come on guys!!

Yes its a bit off camber, and there seems to be a bit of a braking rut and some loose sand.  but its honestly not bad from that angle ...

.....

Absolutely...

I'm not saying that it is easy (and with all the falls it clearly isn't) or that I would make it through without eating dirt, what I'm trying to get at is how the video/pic undermines the trickiness of the trail... it just doesn't look that difficult.

From high def pic it certainly does not look like anything that tricky or that should have totalled that many riders.

The line down the right over the rocks (which we used to ride back in the day) is much gnarlier.

That being said, we need to bear in mind that most of the guys seen in the clip:

1) Don't ride with a dropper, something which we all know makes a huge difference which we mostly take for granted these days.

2) Have bike setups which were done by "scientists" for pedalling efficiency and don't even remotely take trail manoeuvrability into account.

I think we should ride it first.

I took a video of my son riding down something ridiculously unrideable in our local nature reserve. On the video it looked pretty tame.
