epic women's race not up to scratch - Gunn-Rita

and from what I see, her partner dropped out early, so in st 6 & 7 she wasn't allowed to start in batch A cos she was an outcast... Or am I off the mark here?

Yup - her partner didn't finish Stage 4 so she was an outcast from then on. No idea where they start. Group C I think....

Something is whacky though cos she claims they started Stage 1 in Group B - the rules clearly state that she should have started in A (less than 1 hour behind the leaders). Stage 2 they should have started in A as well (it was a hotspot stage).

exactly... so it seems as if they just didn't study the rulebook properly, which - for a "pro" team is pretty stupid.

the teams are actually shepherded into the their start groups and the start groups are posted the night before. So its a possibility there was a administrative error on the event side as well.

Still, does not take away from the suggestion that GC contenders should start in the same start group, not just the top5 within an hour of the leaders.

they were in 6th or 8th at the start of Stage 1 so they would not have been allowed to start in Group A anyway as only the top 5 within an hour of the leader is allowed to do so.

Since they were never in the top 5 they never got their chance to start with the other racing ladies.

PS: if you read through Gunn-Rita's history she does not come across as a complaining individual. So something about the event really riled her to make the statement she did. I also think its being blown out of context, she's a Viking woman and you don't treat her like a petite little child.

just overlooking the Hotspot stage of St 2, Tim. You're right in that on st 1 they wouldn't have been in grp A, but in St 2 they should have been.

Oops. My bad. Indeed. They were 6th so they wouldn;t have started Stage 1 in Group A.

Ok - she has room to complain! I retract retract retract.

Surprise! If one reads her blog it is primarily glowingly positive about the event and not the ranting of a sour prima donna. I have to smile at some of the acid comments from our hub legends but with 28 World Cup wins,18 Olympic, World and European championship gold medals over a 20 year professional mtb career hopefully people will appreciate G-R's comments where they are comming from.

...And If you've actually met the woman and her husband and enjoyed a few beers with them in a foreign country you'll know she's not an acidic type but very balanced and considered when speaking or voicing her opinion.

I am sorry but it is plain stupid to split at least the top 15 woman's team in contention (lets assume that it was a well contested race). To split the entire field purely on the grounds of time diff from the leaders time is unfair since people don't only compete for overall but is cats as well. This is a HUGE oversight in my opinion (if this is the case)

She won the 2013 Marathon World Champs as well at the age of 40, Ariane and Anika were more than 10 minutes off the pace in that event that had 3700m of climbing.

Well, seeing that nobody is going to ask, but who is Gunn-Rita ?

Someone who is not used to life in the middle of the herd

The thing is we should be creating good racing across the classes. Let like race with like as much as possible. And have the same rules for everyone.

So seed everyone according to GC. Back-up teams included. That will make them race. Then there can be no complaints. You are where you are, pro or amateur.

And outcasts should start near back.

Otherwise, at least let the top teams in each category start together and have the chance to race each other. Some may have a great day and win a stage.

If the pro's complain, then let all pro's start up front. Elite men and women and the seed the rest in groups.

After the prologue Gunn-Rita was 2 minutes down on Ariane and Annika.

Stage 1 Water Point 1 it was still about 2 Minutes.

Stage one final standings they where 58 minutes down on Ariane and Annika.

Stage 2 Gunn-Rita took about 9 minutes longer to get to waterpoint 1 than what it took Ariane and Annika.

It took Gunn-Rita 17 minutes longer to get to waterpoint 2 on Stage 2 compared to Ariane and Annika.

Stage 2 final standings they where 18 minutes down after the penalty that Ariane and Annika received.

Stage 3 WP1 Gunn-Rita was 12 minutes down on Ariane and Annika.

WP2 Gunn-Rita was 19 minutes down.

Stage 3 final standings Gunn-Rita was 29 minutes down.

No matter what she says they got taken to school by the RECM Ladies and that is that. If she came to Scout as she says why the statement?

As good as Gunn-Rita is she will struggle to keep up with the RECM Ladies.

For one they have youth on their side. Quicker recovery and being able to ride at a higher tempo for longer.

To be fair her partner was also not well.
