Garmin Speed Cadence Failure

I am having problems when I add the combination of Cadence and speed.

I believe to have the cadence future you have to have the speed magnet on the rear wheel.

It worked fine for 4 months and now the speed does not work, so I have to dis-enable the Cadence and Speed.

does anyone know...

1-how to solve this,{i have installed a new Battery and checked the distance of magnet to sensor}

2- or can you run with cadence but disengage the speed magnet,(im sure this is just for the indoor trainer anyway}

There is a little red led that flashes on the device for the first few magnet passes - very faint - if you don't see that then try moving the magnets/device a bit.

You can use the cadence feature without the speed function. I only have the magnet on my crank for cadence, and not on my wheel for speed. Use GPS for speed. (I have the Edge 510)

If it doesn't flash then reset the cadence sensor by holding the button down for a few seconds. It will flash one red, then one green and will then flash red again with each pass of the magnet. Think the LED will flash for the first 60 passes or something like that and then no longer flashes.

With every pass of the speed magnet the light will flash green.

Thanks Jan,

How do I do this, as on the unit is says enable Cadence and Speed, if i do this the cadence displays but the Speed stays at 0KM.

If I disengage this then the cadence do not work but the speed goes back to GPS speed?

I've been experiencing this same issue on my training bike. Generally I like to have the speed sensor on the wheel in order for my indoor training to register on my Garmin. However, during rides, the speed sensor appears to lose signal and the Garmin keeps registering 0km/h. Strange indeed.

I had a similar issue with a heart rate monitor sensor in that I inserted a new battery and it seemed to have stopped working.  I found something on the garmin faq and elsewhere on the web where was advised to bridge across the battery terminals with a paper clip before inserting a new battery which discharges any residual in the sensor and somehow resets the sensor.

It worked for the HRM sensor and started working straight away after that.

Then do the normal setup once the new/old battery is installed.

Maybe it will work, no harm in trying.

The Garmin cadence speed sensor is notorious for stopping working after a while. main reason is that it is not watertight, and normal washing, or light rain riding kills the sensor. I have replaced several in the past, Garmin didnt want to know about the problem.

its a R500 consumable (probably more now) so be wary of this when washing down your road bike, and dont use it on your mountain bike. Once the damp inside starts to short circuit the mechanism, you end up replacing the battery every second day.

as said above, the little clear 'push' light flashes green for speed when the wheel magnet passes, and red for when the crank cadence magnet passes. This indicates that your battery is still good and the unit is working.

Maintain a 1-4mm gap between the magnets and the receiver arm(speed) and the unit line(cadence) and it should pickup if all is still well with the unit.

this is exactly my issue, have you found the fix

I would revisit the wheel magnet.....get a bigger/stronger one.  Check the distance between sensor and magnet etc..

On a positive note, you don't have any such issues with the new speed sensors that fits on the hub.......

I've gone through all my settings, don't know where to switch it on and off, and if there is such a switch.

Remove the magnet on the wheel and check that your GPS is on:

Settings >  System > GPS > GPS Mode: GPS / GPS+Glonass

(This is on the Edge 510)

This is all I  can think of.

Sorry if I've missed something but how can you measure cadence if the magnet is on the rear wheel surely it should be on the crank?

ok I just pressed the reset button on the sensor and got a green and red flashing lights when everything rotates, looks like it could be the fix, but have only work stand tested it.

I had a similar problem. Replaced the battery, could get it to flash green and red when passing. Eventually it would start missing wheel rotations, so keep on auto-pausing. When recalibrating the wheel using the GPS the wheel size was just about double. Gave up and just ride with GPS.

can you ride with cadence and avoid using the rear wheel rotation, to me it looks like you cannot use the one without the other, i would prefer speed to be working on GPS
