BB... what rear size do you run with that 32T

G

I'm no expert but I reckon a 32 and a 34 would work for most mere mortals, pretty easy to change,

As an aside, me I'm too lazy to chop and change so just use a 32. Did the Winter Fast One with that and had no issues but I am not 'fast' by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm quite intrigued by OneUp's 45T expander sprocket for the 11-42 cassette. Allows you to run a larger chainring, such as a 34T/36T, without busting your poop-valve on the climbs.

the larger chainring gives you better top end as the shimano cassettes dont have a 10 like the sram 11sp. dunno how good the shift to that huge cog would be, big jump

some guy on here did the epic on the 36T, I have used the 32T but have found that for the last 8 months the 36T has been fine, havent found a climb that i had to walk yet.

Yes. It's quite the big shift from 40T to 45T. Will probably only use it as a bail-out. Think I'll start off with a 34T and see how it goes. Think I should be fine.

ive got sram 11sp so have a 10 on the back. it came with a 32 on the front, always meant to change to a 34 based on the gearing i had when i was 2X10. ive never got round to it and havent needed anything bigger yet.

Hi all got some answers to some of the questions I had...

Thought I'd share, just in case others had the same questions.

M8000 Single-Ring Chainring - 32T

I believe there is a chain line setting required, either 50mm 0r 53mm? Can you tell me more, how do I determine which I need. someone said it's to do with my rear... which is to be a 142x12 Syntace setup. The chainline changes depending on your ring setup(single/double/triple) so this in a single would be fixed so no need to stress about that. Xtr has different q-factors to accommodate different bikes i.e hardtail or full susser. Xt this is not applicable.

Chain Ring Swopping

How difficult is it to change from a 32T to a 34T the swop is really simple it is really just four torques, 5 minute job.

Gear selection and considerations.

Do you agree with the 11-42 with a 32T, atm I have a triple (42/32/24) on my current bike (Pyga OneTwenty 650B) with a 11-34 cassette in the rear, I'm a weekend warrior happy to do 60-80km and done some races socially. For me I agree, I will personally be going 32/34 depending on course then 11-42 as this bail out gear(42) would come in handy. Probably 34 most of the time. going from a triple to single you will need to adapt to it. Also keep in mind if you one day need to go to double you cannot use the 11-42  cassette. Not sure it will be necessary but would like to mention it to keep in mind.

Shimano BB91 MTB Press Fit Bottom Bracket

Does the new crank still fit into this BB? 100% compatible so you can use the smbb7141/9141 or else the new version which is really just a bit lighter smbb9441. The 9141 will be replaced by the 9441 from mid this year.

Brakes

I HAVE a spare set of BL-M785, which I normally used with SL-M780-I shifters, iSpec, now I don't know if this is iSpec B or 2, I'm thinking it is 2, whats the difference and how do I determine which specification my brakes will accept, so that I can order the right shifter for the rear derailer. The new 11spd xt will offer a shifter to fit your current brakes, my only concern is delivery. I think these are coming later than clamp and i-spec2. Most of the x will be available from end July to end August.

I spec 2 is only for the new blm8000 lever, for blm785 you would need either I spec b or clamps.

M8000 Shadow+ rear derailleur, GS / long

Do I need long, or can I go with a medium usually on full sussers we prefer sgs rd’s but in a single setup with the correct chain length a gs would be fine. Also then if you go double in future sgs would be better/safer option.

The shift to the 45t is no bigger than the jump from 3rd to 2nd, namely 5t.

The converted 11-40 11spd cassette goes 11-13-15-18-21-24-27-31-35-40-45. This is less of a jump than the 6 tooth gap between 36 and 42 on converted 10sp cassettes.

in the legth of the derailer cage, for a 1x11 setup its pretty important to have the medium cage, the pully is offset, a medium cage will rotate more than a long cage, thus making more use of the offset

From Shimano.

if you gonna run a 1 x 11 then the GS is perfect, if you want to potentially run a 2 x 11 then go SGS.
