You can imagine how confusing it got in the middle of the thread when the dates changed . Flip I got so confused I didn't know when I was racing where. Had visions of rocking up to race one morning and I'm the only poepal there.

And then you guys threw in a third race into the conversation just to confuse the hell out of me. Glad to say i am on track with this thread again, even though i will only be doing the D2D.

Yes Tombeej the D2D is 111km not 105km. Your Route and profile looks correct, going to be my longest event yet on the road bike.

Need to keep some gas in reserve for that bump right at the end, just before the finish.

Interesting course, looking forward to it  .

You're referring to the Dome to Dome whereas I was referring to the Race for Victory.

A classic case of confusion

I think a thread split is in order....

Hi guys, I would like some advice on this race please.

The R4V will be my first ever "not road-closed" race. I have only done the 94.7 and Argus since I started riding 6 years ago.

After a horrible 2014, I've joined a cycling coach, drop 15kg so far and for the first time since I start cycling, I trained through winter. Now, at the beginning of the season, I'm probably in the best condition I've ever been.

My question is what can I expect from this race in terms of bunches, road safety (I hear that the marshalling is quite good) and what should my strategy be?

Are there certain "rules/ etiquette" for open road races that differ from full road closure races?

If I want to do a sub 3, in what bunch should I at least start? My last race was last years 94.7 and it was my worst race ever, so my seeding will be quite low I presume. I phoned the race office and they are willing to do re-seeding's.

I believe I can do a sub 3 especially since it is sort of a flattish race and want to start in a group where I don't have to do all the work. I'm quite happy to share the work load.

I want to use this race and Satellite classic to get my seeding up for 94.7 and Argus. My main goal is to do a sub 3 Argus and everything from here onward is with that in mind.

I will appreciate all your feedback.

A sub 3 R4V requires some strong riding. Looking at last year's result you'd have to start A bunch for a realistic chance. If the wind blows like it did in 2013 going sub 3 is something reserved for the front end of the Vet batches.

BUT, while saying that, the route has changed, so who knows, the new route might ride faster.

R4V is the last seeding race for 94.7 so Satellite will only count towards Argus.

I rode 3h00 on the dot from unseeded FL group last year so it is definitely possible from a seeded group... BUT and a big BUT at that will depend on the wind for the day.

As mentioned it is relatively flat and once you get into the second half of the route there is just open farm lands for km on end that provide no shelter. Staying in a group that works together will be key in this case for a good time.

This year's race has a slightly different route, and if the wind blows like it normally does the first 20Km and final 20Km will be into the wind. The rest will all be tail/cross winds and very nice rolling terrain or downhill. Oh, and it's also 5Km shorter (which will probably result in about 8-10 minutes quicker times for the open groups - all depending on the wind conditions and group speed).

This is going to be my 1st 100+km road race...nervous but also excited.

Wonder where I will get seeded and if I can stick with that bunch.

If I can manage 32-33km/h over the distance I will be happy.

That's not slow...

If HBO's target is sub 3hr for Argus then I'd guess his target for these flattish Gauteng races should be sub 2h40 at least? From my limited experience of racing up there (this is my third visit north) the bunches don't break up and they're pretty damn fast. A batch should finish comfortably above 40km/h average speed, and front of B batch around 40. Argus times should be quite a bit slower, if I'm right?

thanks for the feedback.

are there any do's or don'ts that I should be aware of that is different to a full road closure race?

I know the area from riding SBR quite often and know that the wind can blow there.
