When should you help out a fellow rider?

Anybody that does not buy and carry a spare derailleur hanger deserves whatever hardship is waiting on the day. This is a part that is designed to break in order to protect your frame and RD. And they are frame specific.

If you carry spare brake pads and a cable, then you should also carry a hanger for your frame.

I will stop for a medical issue obviously and also if the rider could be in danger if not helped. But if he is just plain stupid or negligent then he must suffer enough that he will prepare himself in future.

Friend of a friend arrived on a ride the other day with metal-on-metal brake pads ... as we know this means the little pad spring gets graunched into the disc and grinds away with a horrible noise. Eventually I installed my spare brake pads on his bike to stop the risk of him crashing. He didn't bother to pay for them, replace them or even get my details after the ride.

NixM you rock for being so kind hearted but I think some people deliberately plan on using helpful riders like you when they have issues.

there's not universal answer, but here are my guidlines for what its worth:

A handful times a year I race for time.  For these races I prepare long and hard, come prepared and I have no guilt for flying past people that are stuck next to the road in a somewhat selfish manner.  I would obviously stop for crashes and emergencies, but I won't be dishing out spares to some oke that tried to wing it with not tools, tubes, bombs or tyre levers.

When I'm out training or taking part in a race that I'm not very stressed about the outcome, I stop and help, especially if its noobs that still need to learn what to bring along and how to do some basic repairs.

On a stage race its not acceptable IMO to not be proficient with basic bike mechanic skills.  I can forgive a guy for not riding around with a spare derailleur hangar ( I have done this many times before), but not having an allen key, not keeping in touch with your partner and relying on somebody else to do the work for you is just poor form.

Everybody pays a lot of money and put in a lot of training to do a stage race, I think its just selfish towards the other folk out there to rock up with only an energy bar and expect the world to stop whenever you have a mechanical issue.

My old man has a similar approach to his MTB races as the two posts above.

He will stop and help you if you have a mechanical, but only if its with your own tools and parts. If you aren't prepared, you must learn - he says :)

sheesh, who carries a spare cable ?

and brake pads in their bag ? I get carrying this stuff in your kit on a stage race, but not on yourself while out riding.

....then again I will carry a pack of these and hand them out to every stranded rider.......for FREE!!!!

Reading most of the comments I get concerned for my fellow man. Why do you expect anything in return when offering assistance? Why not offer assistance with an open mind and without your personal baggage. See what happens.

I assisted a chap in the last 94.7 and he was over the moon when I told him I wanted nothing in return for giving him a tube and bomb after his second puncture of the day. We shook dirty hands and both smiled ear to ear as we rode off both with hearts a joy.

I would rather someone not offer me assistance if they had an alternative agenda.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Slowbee, it just takes 1 snapped cable for you to always have a spare in your bag.

Cramp blockers don't work, train harder.

Items to carry:

Cable ties,

hand pump(useful after your second bomb is empty)

2x 25g bombs for 29" wheels

Dérailleur hangar with spare fixing bolt

Small multi tool

2 tyre levers

Bomb applicator nozzle

Plug kit with enough plug strips and glue

2x powelinks

2x tyre inner valves

Small Black valve removal tool

1x chainring bolt

2x bottle cage/stem bolts

1x long dérailleur cable

1x spare tube

1x presta/shrader valve adaptor

2 or 3 tyre boots

Bank note (can also be used to boot a cut tyre )

Get some knowledge as to how you use the stuff you carry. Not everyone stops, not everyone is interested to help. Some do, bless them. replace what you borrow - that is MUCH better than beer????

It's not about an agenda. It's about helping the guy with pleasure, giving him a tube and not expecting anything in return.

But it was a bit deflating to see the same guy, 20 minutes later, not acknowledging  your existence when there's only 2 cars in the car park: his and yours. It's not about expectations. It just would have been nice to just wave a thank-you acknowledgement to me if it was too far to walk the 50 metres to my car after I've just saved him a 10 km walk.

Would I help in future? Yes, if I can.

Nix I feel your pain, I'm always thay guy, the one that carries all the spares and tools, and has the ability to fix or make a plan to get you home.

I Just spent R800 at the LBS today replacing spares that have been used.

I always give a lecture and tell the recipient to pay it forwards.

I wouldn't be able to ride past someone needing help, my conscience would bother me. So I will help where I can.

You have committed a cardinal sin.......girl helps boy in mechanical trouble........boy's ego goes poef......

Dean, you are doing them no favours meneer....think about it this way.

Stop and help the guy with a puncture and he will forget what you did or how to prevent / fix said issue nevermind how much it cost you in rande, the moment he throws his leg over the bike.

Ride past him(don't point and laugh though) and I PROMISE you it is the last time he ever rides without snotplugs / tools / checked his sealant...Nothing helps you to become more self reliant or get a reality check about weight weenie kuk, than a 10km klap-n-toon back home.

You doing him a favour by riding past...tough love I say, please see hot aunty rule above for exceptions

 , I guess I will have to add some stuff then. But I reckon by the time I get the cable all sorted and indexing fixed while on the side of a road, the ride will be over the the sweep truck would have gone by ten times over. So I will have to add a headlight to be able to fix things in the dark
