if you go to the top and turn right do a sharp steep climb that runs next to a fence then some sweet trails all the way down to the bottom...that looks like this. Awesome

That does look pretty awesome but I was warned about being vulture food going on the blue remember

Right after going up the paved bit, or right there at wendell's way sign for blue?

The paved bit didn't look like it was part of a trail - didn't want to go trespassing.

Annual entry fee R1400...the Joburgers obviously have more money than the Capies, you can join Tygerberg MTB Club for around R600 which gives you access to about 100km of trails.

Or don't take the sum total of value being distance, go ride the blue route in 2 hours or less and then talk. Some guys from Stellenbosch have ridden Thaba and have been blown away by the riding on offer.

There are national level xco trails, a practice section for DH riders and dirt jumpers.

There's also the cost of securing a large reserve area in a built up metropolitan area, employing staff, a shop, parking, showers etc etc ...

A portion of the entry also goes towards animals for the reserve.

Tygerberg is great, some of the best trails around it's also a bit of admin to go ride if you're not a member. There are pros and cons to both venues which affect costs differently, it's not really a question of having more money

UNI, thanks for your comments. We are sensitive to the entry fees but it is becoming more difficult to maintain the trails to an acceptable standard. Petrol..labour.. maintenance to trail machines..etc.but if you take R1400 over 12 months and one ride a week...it will cost R29 per ride and if you ride more often it really becomes a small fee to pay.

If the fee increase allows Wendell to maintain, and improve Thaba like he always does, I am happy to pay. I ride there often, love the trails, and can see the hard work that goes in especially during the rainy season to prevent the destruction of the trails

Next time you're here, go ride that blue trail. Just once :)

It's one of the few trails you ride where you always see the guys cleaning (sweeping) and maintaining the trails. Wendell does a phenomenal job of maintaining the trails......and where most don't even see like the a& b loops and gully, Barry's point etc.

And if you want to test yourself ride the loops.

R40 is excellent value and I will happily support trail parks that put the rider first.

Maybe we're just better at maths. R600 for the membership plus all the air tickets to get there to ride the trails ... and transport for the bike would be extra ... not to mention all the travel time that could have been spent riding!   :whistling:

As so many have stated I can only re-iterate that the trails are well maintained there are quite a few options for the 'trail', XCO and even just normal riders AND they have ILLY coffee!

It's in a natural area with game and you feel like you are far from the city even though it's in the midst of a few suburban areas. Loads of parking and easy access!

I ride there often and even now after all this time I have started riding a new section I never tried before and incorporated it into my 'normal' training ride.

Ag man, the illy coffee really isn't all that! Note the use of lower case!  :P

Wasn't me Wendel :(

I've ridden there only 3 times now, love it more each time. I enjoy the fact that ppl are there to ride, unlike so many other places where it's mayhem with kiddie parties, park runs etc. I have no delusions about how much it costs to maintain the reserve and Trails.

Yes there are places that I believe jump on the bandwagon and are a rip off, I don't include Thaba on that list.
