bunny hop

Somewhere on this here hub is pictures of me attempting to bunny hop a pavement at speed and getting it wrong.

I am still trying to get it right, but at 49 years of age I have too many self preservation genes in me.  My son regularly have a nice dig at me for my failures at trying.

Maybe you are trying too hard and thus have too much body movement.  But I am definitely not the expert.

this is probably the stupid'ist question on the hub, but ever since I got my new bike, I get a natural tail whip when bunny hopping, I know its got something to do with my weight distrubution and the way I pump the bike, the side of the whip changes if I change my attack position ie putting the other foot in front, I am also a goofy, natural Right hander but surf and skateboard I stand with my left foot at the back.

how do I correct this? Everytime I do a hop I see myself going down and breaking my arm again

post a video of yourself or it never happened ????????

Every time I hear the word bunny hop I want to cry and if I see someone doing it I want to punch them, because for the love of all things good and great I can not do it. I have watched videos and they make it look so easy, and that pisses me off even more. can someone please give me some advice on how to do it, talking about the real makoi not bok or pronk.

I would suggest going back to basics in learning to do it, like the way I learnt when I was a lightie on my BMX.

Best way to learn is with flat pedals, as thats when you do it PROPERLY.

Its all in shifting your weight, damn I dunno how to teach someone to do it but if I put a bit of thought into it its essentially a weight shift maneuver with a little bit of a pull on the bars in some strange order.

I dunno, I can do it, dont ask me how to teach it.... im gonna suck at teaching.

We used to hop over old 5l oil cans standing up and when we put them ontop of one another and eventually damaged them we blew them up with our firecrackers

It took me forever to teach myself how to bunnyhop properly (back in those days there weren't any skills clinics and I didn't know about the DH/jumping crowd). Because I had to work it out for myself plus discovering the countless wrong ways of failing at it, I basically worked out how to teach others to do it. I applied this into most mtb skills especially after riding with many guys who were better than me. and thus my skills clinics began... I haven't done many lessons recently because of the new bike shop but with all the requests I've received, I'm planning on getting them going again soon.

Most intermediate riders can learn to bunnyhop in one lesson. In December, out of a group of four ladies, two managed to learn first time.

A few years ago one of my beginners (he'd been riding a mtb for a week and we'd done skills on 5 of those days) posted here after successfully learning to do it:

It's essentially a box jump, but with a bike attached. :)

Pre-load the pedals, then explode upwards but lifting your arms / handlebars first. Peach can teach you lekker...

Unfortunately, if you can't jump while standing, you won't be able to bunny hop your bike either. You need that explosive power in your legs to provide sufficient lift.

Step one: Learn to lift front wheel

Step two: Learn to pick up rear wheel.

Step three: Combine the two.

This is how I teach people. Managed to teach a fellow forum member in one afternoon.

Perfecting manuals also makes a HUGE difference.

Now... Who can pronk on flats? :P

Forgive me but is a pronk?

Lifting both wheels off the ground at the same time.

Generally achieved by lifting the bike up by pulling up on the  clipless pedals and bars at the same time..

nope broke my left arm trying to get a whip right 3 years ago, it really worries me

nah bru, I was just getting up to some mischief there, while sitting in an airport bored out my skull..

I reckon it is cool that you try improve your skills. I have been steadily learning as I ride, and can now comfortably negotiate a table top jump, of about .5 meters  ...Still, skills are where the fun in mtb is for me.

Kudos mate.

Think the English bunny hop is doable. That Yank bunny hop has caused me a few dented rims trying to get over a pavement. I have nightmares trying to get it right!

Super slick when you see someone do it right...buggers!

I need to learn without loosing any front teeth!
