Peaches teaches it at his skills lessons.....it's bloody hard but more so after 30 min of constant I was knackered. Later that evening could hardly even lift my arms up.

Chris demonstrating how easy it is......... For him

I find the bunny hop easy. Maybe because of bmx when I was at school. You must check out my pronk on my wr250 when I show my friends a bunny hop over a small rock and the only thing getting air is my feet off the footpeg. If you feel like a dwis imagine what you look like he he

Every time I hear the word bunny hop I want to cry and if I see someone doing it I want to punch them, because for the love of all things good and great I can not do it. I have watched videos and they make it look so easy, and that pisses me off even more. can someone please give me some advice on how to do it, talking about the real makoi not bok or pronk.

I've been riding bikes for 27 years and I could never bunnyhop. Peach managed to teach me in a 2hr session about 8 months ago. Here's my version of what you need to do. ;

1 I always attempted to pull the bike up I. E. Towards my chest and somehow try to pull my feet up. That doesn't work.

2 you need to lower your seat initially, the more the better. Also get flat pedals.

3 without trying to get air at all, lean back and make sure you can get into a manual. Doesn't have to be spectacular YouTube stuff, just make sure you can lift your wheel by say half a meter while leaning backwards with straight arms. It's no good if you pull the bike into your chest with the bars

4 I practiced the bunnyhop it as a 2 part motion. First get your front wheel up (manual) then you step down hard onto your pedals and jump. As your feet shoot into the air, your body automatically goes forward which pushes down your front wheel. This motion brings up your rear wheel and keeps contact with your pedals, you don't have to try and pull the rear end up with your feet.

5 I practiced this until I could clear a broom stick on 3 bricks that was 350mm high. (get a PVC pipe though, I went through a lot of brooms)

6 Once I had the hang of it, I smoothed out the motion to compress, lift front wheel and jump in one go. I tried this recently on a jump bike. It's much easier cause these bikes are super easy to manual

I'd still recommend going to peach though, guy is a great teacher.

It was a word coined here on the Hub as an accurate descriptor for said practice...

cough cough, I will take credit for that thanks so much

Yep good ol pronk, like a springbokkie, check youtube clips. See the "pronk" is when you lift both wheels of the ground at the same time, because well, you are clipped into your bike and pull the whole bike into the with your legs. Handy little skill for small obstacles and trenches but not a bunnyhop and not advised if you want to clear bigger stuff like logs etc.

The problem with the pronk is that although your front wheel will clear the obstacle, your back wheel won't since it has to travel so much further than if you had to bunny hop where your back wheel only starts lifting at the top arc of the front.

But to answer the OP's question....don't start with the bunny hop, start with manual first, that will set you up for doing bunny hops properly

Last song I heard on the radio when I stopped at the office this afternoon was "Dont worry be happy" .So now I'm riding on my SS on my way home from work with this song playing in my head and I start thinking of this thread.I did a couple of 'English Bunny Hops' witch I'm use too, then started to do a few wheelies and not long after I managed my first 'American Bunny Hop'.Must say it felt weird on flats and I struggled to get it right a second time, but will practise some more while out on the trails over the weekend.

English bunny hop is a pronk as we call it both wheels off the ground at the same time. American is when you first lift the front wheel and then follow with the rear.

Thats exactly right. I have always done the pronk or English hop. Its useless for getting up steep stuff or getting real height. The manual is the key to many improved riding skills, the hop being a rather NB one.

Used to do exactly the same until the move to flats meant I couldn't anymore. Had to learn the right way. I still can't hop to save my life (my normal standing jump is hopeless as well, so that's to be expected) but at least I have the technique mostly right now...

I find it quite useful to keep speed up on tech/rooty sections, if you can do the proper bunny hop you get the front tyre down a lot faster so gives you more control especially if there's a corner straight after.
