"Would you wait" unwritten rules of mountain biking

Very cool! Kudos to you whoever you are!!

Just a lttle add to this story; at the Ashburton Meerendal Ultra, Alban Lekata and Erik Kleinhans were in the lead, when Erik wiped out, Alban slowed down and waited for him to catch up! Erik still said in a post when he congratulated Alban, the fall did not influence his 2nd behind Alban at all,...apparently its a silent agreement between pro riders on oneday's...

Imagine Absolon waited for Nino on Sunday,..well, he wouldve been 2nd then ????

This was posted in another thread and opened a big can of worms and black holes in my head.

Surely in a mountain bike race, part of it is being able to stay on both wheels. Why would you wait if someone else fell? Yes nice etiquette, but if you fall is that not a case of tough cookies because the bike handling (or lack of concentration) was dodgy ?

Depends on the following to me:

1. Did I see the fall; if yes, how bad did it look, not so bad, suffer in silence sunshine

2. Did he/she actually "PN", then you stop and make sure they are OK and call for help if needed.

I have seen a good few accomplished riders "PN"...it happens, even to the good guys/gals.

Ed, as back marker (and discussed on another thread), easy to stop. But as a pro ? I mean you racing for top honours and top dog dollar ?

it's part of the sport, not falling, so sorry, you lose.  Otherwise Nino would have been rewarded for taking an ill-conceived risk.  Even if he PN'ed, there are medics.  It's a World Cup.

Look at Downhill, Athletics, horce racing.  Sorry, it's a race and people fall due to taking big risks or lack of skill - either way if it bombs out you don't deserve to win.

Too many people entering races with insufficient skills.. if you are a good sport, you can stop if it looks pretty bad, otherwise ride on. Race officials can assist since that is why they are there.

I dont think Absolon had to wait for Nino, but I think it was a hollow win for Absolon, I would wanted to win because I was the strongest not because Nino made a small(big) mistake 100 meters before the end.

In my environment (middle to back of the pack) I will definitely stop if their is a faller that i have been" racing" quick r u ok and then go.'

I see NO reason why Absalom had to stop,it is a race, their lively hood and big bucks involved.

In any case their was enough help around if Nino was injured.

In xco it would just be stupid to wait.

The course was way too short, there were 1000's of spectators to assist with any injury & medics on hand. Niño had already remounted by the time Absalon passed him. So no he didn't have to wait.

Ultra marathon yes maybe as in Lakata & Eriks case.

At the sharp end of a world class mtb race (and I have never been there myself) I would imagine there is no need to wait. Unless you caused the crash, then waiting is just good sportsmanship.

If it's my job, the top dogs chew the bones...no.

How did this go from LeKata and Kleinhans to Nino and Absalon....

Marathons to XCO lap racing.....

Spot on. It's like comparing eggs with apples.

Thumbs up to Lakata for waiting for Kleinhans. To me it merely shows his sense of sportsmanship and fair play.

Maybe this is the reason that it went from Kleihans/Lakata to Schuter/Absalon?
