What bike is it? Reason I ask is that I've just found SRAM's compatibility sheet

https://sram-cdn-pull-zone-gsdesign.netdna-ssl.com/cdn/farfuture/sTuwP23_VJzJytn50DxOK5EgP33HK-ODDtsZRDGHK9Y/mtime:1430932938/sites/default/files/techdocs/gen_0000000004917_rev_c_compatibility_map_2016_mtb_components.pdf

and it says use the med cage on 2x11 on hardtails only.

If you use it on a full sus, and your bike has chain growth, it may all come to pieces if you are not very careful.

It'll be fine if you don't go into big ring and 1st, but if you do and there's chain growth, it'll probably take it past it's max operable dimensions and destroy it.

Specialized Epic Comp, duel sus but only 90mm of rear travel. Was a bit worried about that as full sus means that the assumption I made about the fixed distance between BB and axle is not entirely accurate.

Was also thinking that as long as I keep off 38-40 I should be fine. A bit of a calculated risk and I may end up paying for it.

Just use a longer chain.

Well I am very impressed with the 11 speed Shimano set up... have done close to 300km already and it is very precise. I am running my standard 2x10 front crank and blades and it works perfectly. Could not be happier!

I am a Grippy Fan , so I'm going to get the rear Derailer and grip shift from Sram and the Cassette from Shimano, chain, the cheapest 11 speed, also the Shimano Cassette save you having to buy a XD free body

I hear the gripshift is really bad and slippery in wet conditions

you dont have to guess: either depressurize the shock, or remove it to fully compress (by the same amount as per the max shock travel) the rear suspension and verify you are not stressing the rear mech unnecessarily. Might mean a new chain if your existing one is too short, but you will have peace of mind.

I have a medium length cage on my trail bike, with a 40t at the back and 155mm of travle. No issues.

I have been a shimano fan for very long time and would never had thought of going with anything else. Needless to say my GX 1x11 is on its way. My drive train needs replacing and budget wise the gx makes sense. I have been riding 1x for almost one and a half years now and it simply works great for my riding style. Its Very simplistic and maintaining my bike is hassle free keeping it clean is easy. Bonus is no FD issues

Weight has never been a factor for me. But more best value for money. I have to say that at the price and what i get, sram is pretty much bang on target with what they have going here. Price and weight is neither here nor there so it will come down to lifespan of the drivetrain. Lots of variables there as well.

Eager to fit my groupset and to see what all the fuss is about

My 5 cents and home work done in regards to my buy!

Sweet. Did you remember about the Freehub body needing to be replaced to take the GX Casette?

The weight i actually on the normal bottom of the range crank funny enough. Did not want to believe that it was lighter than my xt crank

So I have my setup installed.

SRAM GX shifters and 2x11 medium cage rear dérailleur

Shimano 11-40 casette and HG700 chain

With my old Shimano XT 785 24-38 crankset

The good

Installation was a breeze, didn't need to even adjust cable drum once. Shifting is excellent and I have ridden over some lekker magaliesberg terrain with no issues stemming from chain growth.

The bad

It really really really doesn't like the 38-40 combination, chainline is very bad in this gear and the chain slips off the chainring. Not that I will be riding in that gear but still not ideal.

I reckon that once my chainring is worn I will replace the 38 with an aftermarket 34.

Strange. I went 40/28 XTR crank up front, and the Praxis cassette which is an 11/40. Although I don't intend riding 40 front and 40 rear other than by accident, I did shift to that in the Hazeldean Trailseeker this past weekend to see what it would do, and it was no problem at all.

I am running a long cage XTR dérailleur, and a full 116 link chain, which might make the difference.

Very chuffed with the cassette. For me (who's not interested in 1 x anything), it's the absolutely perfect spread of gears.
