1 x 11 conversion vs groupset

So, the Mrs sees a bike and says "I like the 1 x 11 ideathingy".

Bike shop man starts talking about conversion at a reasonable price. But another bike shop says add at least 10k for a new groupset and back wheel hub.

In hub wisdom land, is there much of a difference to be had between a conversion and a groupset ? Would a back marker rider actually notice the difference ?

first things first - is the guy up Norff doing a 1x11 conversion or a 1x10 conversion? 2 very different cost structures there.

1x10 conversion - remove chainrings, FD, front shifter. Add narrow/wide ring and MAYBE a range extender. Cost? R2,500 max

1x11 conversion on a bike that has 2x10 or 3x10 - new hub (R 2,000) rebuild wheel (possibly new spokes as well - R 500) new cassette (R 2,000 - R 4,500) remove chainrings, fd, shifter and add a n/w ring (R 1,000) new RD (R 1,500- R 2,500) new rear shifter (R 1,000-R 2,000) Cost? Anywhere up to 8/10k depending on the spec.

Edit: If they're willing to do a part exchange on the old bits, then the costs would come down a bit.

SB do the conversion, costs next to nothing compared to the Groupset and works just as well.

If she likes it maybe later look at the groupset but with the Sram GX and the new 11 speed XT you can mix and match a reasonably priced setup.

Just stick to the 2X10 or 3X10. It will be much easier on the wife, as she'll have a much wider spread of gears to work with.

As I said before if I had only 1 bike it would certainly not be 1*X .... but then again I am just a mere mortal ;)

...or just wait till August for the 1x11 XT. A conversion would cost about...R4500 for Derauleur, shifter, chain, cassette and (non-shimano) NW front ring or R6500 with the Shimano crankset.

I think you mean a 1 x 10 conversion. There is no 1 x 11 conversion. You buy the whole groupset if you want 1 x 11. All a decent 1 x 10 conversion needs is a 11-36 rear cassette and Narrow Wide front blade. You could also add a 40t or 42t cassette adaptor if you want.

i Have just done (3 weeks ago) the 2 x 10 to 1 x 10 conversion with my current Shimano parts. It cost me R3000 all in with the OneUp kit. Not sure i would consider going to 1 x 11 as the 1 x 10 works very, very well.

10/10 for ROI in my books.

I sometimes think we(myself included) get caught up in the ''lemming'' mentally without exploring other options. Not saying I'll never go to 1 x 11 but I'm wondering if i would need it.

R 3000 vs R 17 000 ?

Go with 1 x 10 conversion first, if wife is strong enough/gets fits enough with the 1 x 10 then upgrade to 1 x 11.

she prefers the simplicity of the 1x setup. And once she's made her mind up (like most women) there is no going back.

Terry - easiest solution would be the 1x10 "conversion" which would cost max 3k. She'll still get the spread of gears, if you get the 42t expander ring, and she'll only have one shifter to worry about.

one shifter thats what she wants. She struggles with gearing having seen the 1 x set up, I dont think she wants to put herself through the learning curve of using gears and having to figure things out while riding on the trail. Easy gear push one button, harder push other button, or push pull or pull push, which ever.

thanks guys. conversion it will be.

Ag it's simple then, make it rain and buy her a 2x11 Di2 single-shifter setup!

What about when you need to replace the cassette?

Which option would be cheaper?

Keeping an eye on your chain so you don't have to replace the cassette is the cheapest way of doing it.

10sp will be marginally cheaper though.

back from 1 x10 to 2 x 10 again - and what a pleasure

2x 10 = marathon riding

1 x 10 ( and even 1 x 11) more XC - trail riding

this is only my opinion
