Did it all started with the Epic maybe? Just rise the entry fee each year - after all there is no ceiling. And as said the demand....

HIT 3/4 STAGE RACES ITS HUGE MONEY

yesterday when i got my sani invite i decided enough is enough,,,,,im pulling the plug on a few stage races this/next year

I hope we will see you at 3 Towers

The Ride2nowwhere is same start finish each day for 3 days, R 3500 per person excluding accommodation and the breakfast are all sponsored so you don't even pay for that.

And I thought flying was expensive.

They are expensive, but hey its us that drive the price up with demand.

Has anybody ever done a self supported stage ride? What did that end up costing, for interest sake. Lets ignore the convenience factor for now.

I suspect that to go anywhere for a 3/4 day MTB holiday it will costs around that much money if you include transport, food, accommodation, support etc....

We did the Storms river traverse a few years back and loved it.When enquirying about the cost for this year's race

I was informed that a team entry of 2 wiill cost R8700 EXCLUDING accommodation, which we have to arrange ourselves.

This seems over the top to me.Mountain biking has overtaken golf as the sport of the rich.

I have taken flak for this in the past, but here goes again:

stage race event organising has become a bonafide moneymaking business. I know someone who makes upwards of R1,000,000 per year for organising two such races a year.

granted it's a k@k job that for the life of me I don't want, and it keeps this person busy 24/7 as there are many many things that go into organising a stage race. so it is totally fair to assume this person gets paid for his/her time.

but my point is that the main goal of organising such a race is no longer providing mountainbikers with something to do, but rather to make money for the organiser.

I don't know the ins and outs of how it works, but i would imagine the racer pays his own way (for land access, marshalling, refreshments, goody bags etc), and the sponsors money go towards paying the organiser/s.

dont see the problem, willing buyer, willing seller...capitalism and all that.

If the price is too high, and not worth it, no one will enter, organizer will make a loss. If its worth it, people will enter.

Wish I saw the gap on this a while ago

I agree that the costs are high for us individuals. if I was the organiser I would be demanding a pretty high "Salary". us MTB's are a fussy bunch of people who all want the best. best quality goodie bags best trails etc.

I can only afford to do 1/2 stage races a year so that's what I do.

if there was no "perceived value" then no one would do it. Some of the higher end race eg: Epic are now corporate events were an individual cant afford to do it by them selves. Yes some can but most cant.

As apposed to a money losing business? There is a name for those types of businesses, bankrupt!

Cycling is a business, businesses exist to make money.

As rouxtjie has put it so eloquently: "If the price is too high, and not worth it, no one will enter, organizer will make a loss. If its worth it, people will enter."

Dusi canoe marathon. R800. Excludes camping I think.

Dusi to sea MTB. R7000.

We are being milked.

Dusi canoe only R20 cheaper than attakwas extreme marathon.

The cost of hosting the event has nothing to do with the asking price.

As my eloquent & learned friends pointed out, supply and demand, capitalism etc.

As long as the market (we!) are willing to pay, they can ask what they want. So what if the race organiser earns a proper salary? He's the CEO of that race - with everything that goes with it.

I was very lucky to have done a few of the more popular stage races before they became so expensive. Now I'm just searching for mountain bike races (or rides) in places where I haven't been, rather than repeating where I've ridden before.  Desert Knights last year was very good value for money. Kalahari Challenge also looked like a recently priced event, and it's an excuse to drive to Botswana later this month.  And next year, instead of doing a stage race, I'm thinking of a road-trip somewhere to go ride some of the better-known bike-parks. Maybe harkerville for a few days with a stop-over in George / Knysna on the way there and/or back.

As rouxtjie has put it so eloquently:     NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE THOSE 2 TOGETHER

I surprised myself DIPS

agreed, BUT I feel we are getting fleeced for our love of the game.  Events and the associated costs for accommodation and travelling are getting a handful but (at the risk of going off topic) the price of gear is also bordering on the absurd now.  just yesterday i had to cough up 500 bucks for a chain. I am a weekend warrior that just enjoy doing MTB but it is getting flippin expensive!  Well, at least it is almost weekend and time for some riding!!!

fleeced means you dont have a choice...I am afraid me/you/us do have a choice. I will never do the epic purely because I dont think it is worth it, but guess what, there are hundreds of riders every year that don't think so...So much so that there is a waiting list.

Same goes for the one day classics...with some exceptions. I simply cannot see how a timing mat, mass produced medal and goodie bag will put a smile on my face. Others dont agree with me and will pay top dollar for it and get their perceived value.

Whats the old saying, fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me.
