Oval chainrings

I am on absolute black 34 t Oval - after being on a 34t round and pretty happy - did 361 with it no problem, but I would suggest to perhaps have a XX1 crank where you can use the 28-36 T rings and swop them without removing the crank - only undo the spider - if you can only do one ring , the 34 , on your current crank then ride it for a while and see how the climbing goes and then make the call , but I dont think you will have an issue

I am very happy with a 34t oval ( xx1)

Elliptical Chainrings only available as a direct mount so if you have the GX 1400 model you can then put a direct mount on.

Wolf in stock next week in both GXP and BB30 Oval.

Hi Naas

What size oval chainring would you recommend if I'm currently using a 34t round?

Also, what are the physical dimensions of say a 34t oval, eg at its long and short sections?

I would stay with a 34T oval.  A 104BCD 34T Wolf measures 150mm elongated and 135mm on shorter side.

Basically it will feel like a 32T on the climbs and 36T on flat sections.

Thanks for the reply!

How does Wolftooth compare to FRM and AbsoluteBlack? Besides price/quality, is there different measurements across the 3 rings? or do they all measure 150mm*135mm?

If different how does/will this affect the ride?

I am busy placing an Order with Wolftooth and can include one if you want. We do not bring them in as a regular item.

Let me know.

Im busy with a new 26er build and want to go 1 X 10. I have a SRAM GXP crank so looking at going

34T NW up front

42 on the back

insert a 16 to replace the 15 & 17

So now i see the 34 NW comes on oval as well.

I'm now thinking of going oval from the start. From this thread it seems if you are a *** climber (which i am) then oval is the way to go.

any opinions ?

Marc, A couple of the guys from the club have gone oval on their road bikes and they say it has made a big difference. One thing I noticed on Saturday was we went out before the club ride for a rosebank loop and as we where climbing one of the steeper climbs the guys still on normal rings where in the small blade and those on oval where still in big blade. Now i'm not sure if it was just coincidence or not but the theory behind it makes sense. We tried it on the tandem and it didn't work at all.

So is this 26" a TREK?

So I have decided to buy a small rotar Q ring 64bcd. Reason being that I believe it will assist with my climbing. However I did not want to convert the entire setup. So I bought the 64bcd from Janos at Evo Bikes around November last year. I am running an oval small ring and a round big ring on a 2x10 setup.

Since then I must say it works well, I can really see the difference when climbing single track. You know sometimes you hit a root and you just dont have the power to pedal over it, with an oval you have that extra bit.

Im in the marked for a front 34t chain ring, now the question is normal or oval. I did my 1 x 10 conversion this weekend and the only thing I need is my n/w chain ring.

Now the question is normal or oval,I have been told that the ovals are only good for clipless pedals. Is this true?

I am riding flats with my oval. What I have found is that the oval ring eliminates the hard push on the pedal when your pedal reaches the top. (if you understand what I am trying to say)

Basically because its oval, it is a fluid motion apposed to pedal press hard pedal press hard etc
