1x and clutchless RD Advice

Wanting to go 1 x 10 and have picked up a Rotor Q ring and a CSixx XC chain guide to see if it's for me. I don't have a XT with a clutch and until I'm sure I want to go 1x I don't fancy buying a new XT when the one I have is perfectly fine.

Can I run a 1 x without a clutch? I've got a new XT cassette with a Rapide 40T and a 33 ring (it's not a NW though).

Any advice would be great. I'm actually happy with my 2x with Q-Rings set up and just wanted to give it a go to see what the fuss was about.

Use the CSixx XC Guide with a standard RD and you'll be fine. That's what we all did before clutch RD's.

Setting up the guide on the Rotor ring may be a little 'fiddly' as you'll have to set it up for the 'highest' rotation point on the ring...

Yes its works, not the greatest though.

I would suggest a N/W ring and a bit more tension on the RD works well, also a bit cheaper than clutch derailleur. But, clutch with N/W works best.

Thanks guys! Great work as always. ;)

If I roll well with the 1x then I'll buy a real N/W ring and a clutch RD but if it's not really for me then I'll just stick with my 2x as I've never really had any issues, just fancied seeing what it was all about. I'm riding a trance with AM wheels and a backpack with kit so it's not about weenie choice for me!

You can run any 1x conversion without a clutch derailluer. it really doent make any

difference.

Make sure you cut your chain correctly and you will never have any problems. i have tested shimano SLX, XT - SRAM X7, X9, XX without any issues. used all chainrings from 32t - 36t with a 42t extender.

Not to be a party pooper, but don't base your assessment of how good 1x is on a setup with a rotor ring. N/W chainrings exist for a reason. That reason is the exact scenarios for which rotor rings weren't designed...

It may work OK because you have a chainguide on, but if you're running a proper N/W you most likely don't need a chainguide to start off with, assuming you're running a normal derailleur and don't smash over really bumpy stuff all the time. I rode a shortcage (NB) X9 clutch with an XX1 (N/W) ring for more than a year with only one chain drop over *seriously* gnarly stuff.

For sure, it's just a tester to see if I'm going to go with it. I currently run 2x with no chain guide  and haven't dropped as far as I can remember.

NW rings have longer teeth to limit the chain derailing. I had my 1st chain drop on 1x10 the other day...riding a rough rocky patch and sure enough my clutch was off. Generally the clutch is not essential if u have a NW but it helps and makes the ride quieter. If u have a guide then lack of clutch RD should be a non-issue.

Hijack...

What's the most popular chain guide you guys use on your XC bikes? I see lots of mention above of CSixx, anything else?

currently running a 1 x 10 with a std rear der and the CSixx guide (Review to come after this weekends riding) with a std SS chainring up front ..... ZERO issues, not as silent as a clutch der, but not too bad.

There's the key. A SS ring is way better at chain retention than a normal chainring due to its much longer tooth profile.

Agreed the SS is a better chainring than a ramped ring.

Prior to this setup, I had run a std deore 32t chainring with a G2 guide (excluding the roller) and a std rear 9spd der on a 12-36t cassette and also had good chain retention. Did drop the chain eventually on the odd ride when the chain ring was toast.
