Right of way on the trail

Common sense and the desire to avoid a crash applies. I agree with the maxim keep left and yield to the rider coming up. If we obeyed that we would be good.

Forgive me but most of the aggro and misunderstanding is a South African/Jhb/ my kahunas are bigger than yours sort of thing. So why give way to a noob type of attitude.

Thats my experience

However there are always some knobs out there. I have been shoulder charged by trail runners on the spruit when they saw me miles away and it was obvious there was nowhere else for me to go. Irrespective he insisted on shoving me off the path and threatening to moer me and  my arrogant kind and WTF do i think i own the trails etc.

So be careful around pedestrians, dogs etc as well. Some bite worse than others.....

The rule at Tokai was to yield to descending riders not ascending and it had nothing to do with who 'moan the most'.

Please do publish the comprehensive statistics that you clearly have showing moaning rates per discipline at Tokai because the rest of us would like to see them.

please consult TokaiMTB facebook page for moan rates.

Yielding to descending riders was never a rule. Its a fairly recent development that was pushed through the advocasy groups in the interest of "Safety". I'm told it was just a smoke screen so AM crowd didn't have to interupt their fun on the way down.

A kind of 50/50 peace agreement was some sections were one direction only.

There was plenty of fighting over this some years back. Im sure the TokaiMTB group has the minutes.

The aggro was far worse in Tokai. There the descending rider will point their mtb at the ascending rider for a game of chicken. There were some really interesting characters on that trail

It differs from trail to trail, but one thing remains constant. Don't be a dick

Tokai is the only exception that I am aware of. Everywhere else IMBA's rules apply. Ascending rider has right of way.

Or consult the TokaiMTB website for the rules.

I'm on the TokaiMTB committee and am fully aware of the minutes thanks.

Unless the trail is marked for a direction IMBA rules apply.

It's really that simple, no Facebook rules or anything of the like.

As Cap said. Don't be a dick.

Also watch out for the trail joggers, they the dodgy ones ;-)

All good, unless uni-direction ST then person following direction has right of way. Yes I know you should not go contra, but it happens.

So then you know the history and know that the right of way rule is recent and unique to Tokai. Why do you seem so aggressive. Are these not FACTS?

No it's not that recent and I was just trying to mirror the tone of your original post, where you make unsubstantiated claims about user groups.

I will try harder next time.

Seems like the rest of the world has one rule for multi-directional trails, ie give way to ascending riders, and Tokai has another.Mmmmm

Nah, since at least 2007 when I learnt to cycle there it was yield to ascenders. But what happens is that guys stop on the way up cos they can see people flying down, and don't want to spoil their fun. All goes great for all involved.

But then the guys coming down expect ALL up riders to stop and things get blurred. Or guys rode up trails that are One-way. But even then there wasn't great signage, and I more than once tried to climb them in ignorance.

But Reno said it best - just don't be a dick

Rule 73: when riding illegal trails, always give way to trail runners (or any other legal use(.

Rule 79: when riding two abreast on dual track, oncoming trail runner on left always has right of way (especially in deer park).
