We never had a shifting issue with normal chain rings... I think they making a solution for a problem that never existed.

The issue is you couldn't shift with the narrow wide system seen on the 1 x setups, these are not normal chain rings.

That makes no sense.

Agreed it makes no sense, the reason for a NW chainring was so that you could run a 1 x setup without the need of a FD or chain guide to stop dropping of the chain.

If you have a 2x or 3x setup then you will have an FD so there is no need for a NW chainring

Bikes with front derailleurs still drop chains off the front. I guess they're looking to minimise this.

So it is only useful for people who may (no idea why) change between 1* and 2/3* systems from time to time on the same bike?

Lots of people have seen the error of their ways with 1X and moving back to 2X as 1X is master of non......unless you Kulhavy and you can run a 38 front ring! :-)

The application of Narrow-wide tooth profiles is to reduce the tendency to drop a chain and improve the shift quality. N-W tooth profiles also run quieter so theres a benefit to double and triple set ups if you can design such a tooth profile and chainring ramps to allow the chain to derail and shift to another chainring

Its still a solution to a problem that does not really exist...

For years companies have been adding ramp pins, shaped teeth, angles teeth etc to assist shifting in 2x and 3x systems so why not add NW profiles to assist in chain retention? Its called progress you luddite :-)

Like battery-powered shifters?

I think this might save you for that one time where the chain drops and gets caught between the derailleur and small chainring. Where the only solution is the get off the bike and use your glean gloves and a few swearwords to manually put the greasy chain back on track.

Which is why I still run 2x, dont see the point in saving a few grams only to lose 10 gears and have to try and make up for that with expensive range extenders.

Have you tried 1 x RB ?
