Hi Hubbers,

Quick survey - I need to purchase new road tyres (700c). A quick run down of what you would recommend I get? 700x23? 700x25? Brand etc etc. Max R500/tyre.

Thanks!

if they are not for racing, spend a few bucks more and get Conti Gatorskins 700 x 23.  Bombproof.  High mileage and low punctures.  The best combination!

If your rims can accomodate 25c then get some for training. That being said Gatorskins for training. GP4000S or Vittoria Open Corsa's for racing.

I have been using the Conti Gatorskins for years and they have been great! Recently though I changed to the Specialized Roubaix Pro 25mm for a wider tire and so far so good, noticeably smoother than the Conti.

According to a few sites I came across on google the 25c has a lower rolling resistance. The pros are all on 25 for this reason. They said the rolling resistance was less and overcame the aerodynamics of the narrower tyre. When pumping the 23 to pressures like 8bar the tyre actually starts bulging out on the sides making the contact area more.

Don't know how true all that is but just thought I'd let you know.

I'm running gatorskins 25c for training wheels and GP4000S II for my racing wheels with 25 at the back and 23 at the front. My racing wheels are ENVE and they slightly wider than other rims and I'll admit the 23 looks very funny on the front, it looks too skinny.

You can get gatorskins for under R500 a tyre if you look around

Ya, but generally not the folding variety.

I just put the Spaz Roubaix Pro 23/25's on my wheels. They roll really nicely and I ploughed through the sandy detour route at Lost City without any hiccups.

And considering you can hardly find anything "cheap" from the brand, they really are well priced. As far as I can remember, less than R500 a pop.

So dont take my head off, but what I know about road cycling is dangerous and when out riding yesterday I wondered...how does one know when to replace the tyres?

I kinda dont want to wait till the punctures start, so how do I know before then? In MTB it is easy!
