I looked at those and Lindsay Parry's Comrades plans and I can't help but think it's all too much... also the timing of runs is all just a bit weird for me.

My plan for the next few months, I'm a quality over quantity kind of guy:

Monday Rest (Stretching)

Tuesday 8km

Weds Rest (Bio Work)

Thurs 8km

Friday Squash

Saturday Waterpolo

Sunday 21km

Will build up to an extra run a week after a month with a marathon/ultra planned for each month starting with Johnsons Crane at the end of the month

Little bit of topic, I am selling my Drakensberg Northern Trail 40km entry. Im focusing on Comrades this year and i'm rather going to do the Kosmos 3-in-1. So if anyones interested, pop me a mail at mvangass@sars.gov.za.

I am not running Comrades, being fat an slow means I probably would not make the cut off nayway (at this point) . I run about that per week now and then throw in the other Tri disciplnes too. My goal is to run a :5:36 marathon at Ironman this year. My previous best being a 6:03 and do the Johnson crane hire under 5.

I work with a guy that is a multiple comrades finisher (20) and at most he runs around 600 kays between jan 1 and comrades day. I guess the concept of quality over quantity is more important than we realize.

Good luck to all you brave Comrades entrants...respect.

With this escalating upwards I should hit around 1000km's by Comrades. I ran my previous Comrades on just over 600km's, (cut off dodging time frame) but that was largely due to missing around 6 weeks of training with injury.

I'll be super chuffed if I can get near a 1000, reckon that's as good a build up as I can do at this stage. Time will tell if that's enough I guess

I hit around 1400km last year for comrades and then didnt really rest after...and this is probably largely the reason why I am suffering with PF at the moment...so there is good cause to do quality over quantity. That said....all my sessions were pretty good quality...although the morning plod I guess is not really.

This year with Jan already halfway through and only 8km on the board - I am already about 150 km behind in mileage compared to last year....which i think is a good thing

Okay, I'll bite. All very well to say lets cut mileage but honestly where are you taking it from and why bother? 6 runs a week isn't excessive and perhaps a double sat/sun long run can be skipped, but overall I think Lindsay's programs are spot on.

I'm personally doing a mix between the silver and BR, subbing in some long rides instead of a double weekender. And then I do a quality Thursday instead of a plod. But for us Novice runners, its all about mental prep. Being able to complete the weekly mileage builds confidence and that's what I'm aiming for rather than counting k's to June 4

I'll have a bite as well...       Being the coach of the last two comrades and omtom ladies victories, I fail to see how he can be SO far off.

I also like Lindsey's program. But with the new coach I am using, his approach is Quality over Quantity. I will still run my Long 40km+ runs on weekends, but the midweek is a bit different. I now have to rest 2 days instead of just 1. I didn't really like it because it felt like I am not doing enough, but I di feel stronger and the proof is in the pudding come Comrades Day.

Nothing to bite... we're all on the same team here  :D

Each very much to their own, I was just sharing my view - everyone should do what works for them. Orbit has very different goals to me though, as do Comrades winners - I've no doubt more mileage, more running sessions are required for loftier goals - I've got a friend that runs silvers and he's not scared to hit a 20km run before and after work - excuse me if I made it sound any other way.

For me personally, the most important strength to take into Comrades day is that vasbyt and mental fortitude you need when you get into the uncomfortable miles... hence why I'm aiming for more marathons and ultras this year, and less midweek mileage to keep me fresher and recovering better for the longer runs.

My 2 cents, Andrew Steer, Comrades slogger
