Ferret69 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 yip - get the annual sickness out the way early..frustrating as hell though mate had to sprint in to make the sub 3:20...something like 3:19:50...love the way you casually say a "chilled" 3:18 lol...i would be sucking air big time for that! Haha, all the boys in the bunch we run with are sub3 marathoners, so the pace of a 3h20 is pretty chilled,,, However a Marathon distance is always far... after 30kms everything seems to ache no matter what pace you run at.... No such thing as an "Easy" Marathon or Ultra Vinnydabutcher and Andrew Steer 2
Vinnydabutcher Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Did JC yessterday as my firts Marathon - not a great day out - was strangely hurting by 17km aleady even at steady pace - managed to clock my 10,20 and 30km markers but then started losing time. Was aiming for a C-batch seeding and ran hard at it with 2km to go - body revolted with hamstring being the sacrificial lamb. Walked it off and jogged in missing the 03:40 by 4min. Disappointing but we`ll take it from here.
SwissVan Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Coincidently JC was my first ever marathon ...... Back in 1989 or maybe 1990, think I did a 3:20 +/- was young and inexperienced and very sore afterwards ????My wife is training for comrades and what would she give to be able to run JC or some of the other options in SA in the next few months. This weekend she ran 3 hrs on Sat on her own and 1.5 hrs on Sunday on the treadmill (raining). She is using the Seville marathon in Spain end of Feb as a qualifier, 13000 entries and a long way to go just to run a qualifier but there are not many options at this time of the year here. She is following the comrades official training program for Bronze finish and will still have to do another 42 and a 50+ all on her own...... Good mental training she says ????
ScottCM Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 So last week after I decided to maybe give this year a skip due to this illness i am still battling with I changed my distance for the JC from HM to 10km. The Wife and brother in law did the 5km fun run. After doing late entries and heeding to natures calls we got to the start line 6min after the 10km & 5km had started. I said good bye to them and told my wife to relax, and enjoy it as it was her first ever event. She has never even walked more than a 1km in her life before. She says she is allergic to exercise. Anyway so with hordes of people in from of me I was forced to run on the sidewalk for the best part of the 1st two km's before there was enough space on the road for me to run and pass people. I settled down into a good rhythm and at the 7km mark found that if i kept the current pace and pushed flat out in the last km I could get close to a sub 50min. I ended up pushing slightly to early and faded once we got onto the grass parking lot but came home in 48:46. a PB for me which I was well surprised at as I was aiming for a 57:30. Best part of the day was that the wife loved her achievement so much that she wants to do more!!! VicanZA and Vinnydabutcher 2
ScottCM Posted February 2, 2016 Author Posted February 2, 2016 Rookie error. Decided I'm feeling strong enough to run my maiden, logged onto website for more details… entries capped. Oh well, 2017 it will be. Hi Radman If by substitution date I still feel like I'm not in a place to compete this year, then you can take over mine
Barry Stuart Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Hi Radman If by substitution date I still feel like I'm not in a place to compete this year, then you can take over mineVery cool of you, thanks! I hope it doesn't come to that though. Good luck with training.

Good to see Stretch is back into the full swing of things Anyone else doing Deloitte next Sunday? yip - back on track...the flu knocked me 6 love..still got some sniffles due to increased training again..but I am just packing Vitamin C...gonna take next week a little easier because I have Maritzburg Marathon on the Sunday - and hopefully should be fighting fight again by then. March is going to be fun...gonna be at Kenton for 8 days at the end of the month on Holiday...so gonna have to find some nice beach runs to keep me motivated while sitting back and cracking open some beers Andrew Steer 1
Andrew Steer Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I'm struggling... small calf tear that won't go away. Two weeks good training, followed by now almost two weeks of no training. Super frustrating... doing lots of Bio work, and my legs felt pretty good when running (which is unusual almost), but not getting around this bloody niggle. Time rapidly running out PS: Don't play touch rugby league! 5 good years of fun, but my calves have never been the same again!

SeaBee Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Urgh Andrew, know the feeling. Been on and off with issues on my calf as well small niggle mid-winter and then non-stop since Oct. After Bay2Bay, I decided to say stuff this and go to somebody who is a runner herself to get it sorted properly and try to get to the root of this evil. So it's been a slow couple of weeks or more, think it's closer to a month! But now at last getting there. Been running slow and flat on my high-drop shoes for a couple of weeks. Then could do the 27 for Freedom on the weekend - but was told to chill and do it at long run pace, which I did. This week only (still in those shoes) I could start running hills lightly and from today some speedwork as alternate. Getting there! Pretty sure next weekend Oak Valley XL (trail) will see me ready to roll. Feel your pain, take it easy and get it healed properly. Rush back and you end up like me with repeat injuries. Jigghead Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I've had a couple of runs without pain after the layoff and I'm now ready to up the training. I'm just a little nervous of building too quickly and injuring myself again.

Good to see Stretch is back into the full swing of things Anyone else doing Deloitte next Sunday? Training gets serious this weekend for my wife, running her qualifier marathon in Seville Spain on Sunday. Its not an easy time to train...winter and the flu season has reached almost epidemic proportions and as a result she says she has already washed off a few layers of skin from her hands and carries a bottle of hand disinfectant around with her...

My expectations for Oceans are now very low - hoping to complete in cut-off that's all. As for Comrades - at this point I think it will be a step too far for me this year, but I will leave a small chance open depending how Oceans goes... My marathon qualifier was a real eye-opener. I am hoping it was just a bad day as I felt crap from the start, but flip the distance got to me. Can't get my head around double that and then some
