Comrades 2017 was on my bucket list for next year, before this weekend's race. One of my friends ended up in the ICU unconscious having suffered 2 seizers on her way to the hospital. She collapsed +- 200m from the end with her first seizer. She trained well, was in good shape etc etc. Dr says on the day her body could not handle the stress. It makes me think twice if it is worth the risk.

Pretty much what Stretch said... but yeah, always worry about people popping Myprodols at the Comrades, it's somehow the norm, which is absolute madness.

And yes, far more people dying on the couch than at Comrades

Anyways, wishing your friend a speedy and strong recovery

For most normal people a marathon is a major effort and can be challenging for your body and systems.... With close to 20k runners ( not sure if the exact total) and the distance and terrain involved there are going to be x amount of casualties.

Your friend was probably lucky she was in the stadium and received quick medical suppourt. For the last 90 minutes I was standing at the 1 km to go point, with about 75 minutes left before cutoff a guy sat down and then lay down just in front of me, he was concious but out of it... I stood with him and tried to help but he was unable to even sit up never mind finish.... A marshal called for an ambulance, after about 20 minutes a paramedic on a scooter arrived. Luckily for this guy he was not having a life threating event like heart failure....

For one that doesn't run more than 5km at a time...how long is needed to go from zero to hero to complete a comrades ?

i did this - also starting fro mzero and cycling fitness only

Ran July to Dec 2012 - 5km and 10 km max 15km

Cycled Jan - June 2013 (no running)

Ran July 2013 - Dec 2013 - 5km and 10 km max 15km

Cycled Jan - June 2014 (no running)

Ran July 2014 - May 2015 where i ran first comrades

obviously the last bit included 21's 42's and 52's

not sure you need to prolong it over that long...but found it was a nice way for my body to adjust slowly. could have probably run in 2014..but I already had a sani entry

I've had a knee issue most of my adult life. It's literally taken me about 2 years to go from not running unless I have to, to doing up to 10kays semi decent. I've had to adjust the mechanics of my running to have as little impact as possible on my knee, which took quite a while until it felt natural. (Smaller strides, higher cadence, no bouncing, correct alignment and doing the necessary drills to get these right took a while for it to become ingrained) Can happily run on back to back days now, so I'm running at least 4 times a week now (and cycling a little less at the moment) but building up to running my first marathon in September! If that goes well, Ultra at OMTOM next year and then assess if Comrades is an option.... Will prefer doing the up run with the knee though!

This is on my FIL though

Reading this, and looking at the time is it has taken to improve my cycling. I would think maybe 2 years of solid training for comrades, that's if I could ever make it pass a marathon or half.

Started running late last year then stopped for a while but got going again this week. Will aim to do a half before the end of the year I think.

Pick something about 3 - 4 months away that's a half and enter. Unless you know you have that coming towards you, you will keep putting off the training when the legs get sore and you pick up niggles.

For me to be on track for Comrades, I prefer to have a marathon done by the end of the previous year, and a fast one (qualifier) by the end of Jan, beginning of Feb.

The there is enough time to build up to some ultras

16 October is the South Coast marathon from Scottbrugh to Toti. They offer a HM distance too. I will be aiming to use this as my qualifier for next year.

EDIT: Might clash with ama-shova though not sure of that date

1yr solid prep can take anyone reasonably fit to a Comrades finish imho... I tried 4.5 months and fell a bit short walking over the finish line quarter of an hour late, but 6 months building to a marathon and then 6 months getting more comfortable at that distance will get most that medal.

Sensible approach would be two years though, set two oceans as a goal for year one and then Comrades as a goal for year two

Slow and steady wins the race with running... don't be like me that first year and run a marathon after three weeks - it does not end well

was thinking the same

Even though i grew up in Durbz, i think doing my qualifier down on the coast will be beneficial as a novice to get the mind and body a little bit of a taste as to running such a long distance in the humidity. Plus the view must be great with the ocean on your right for the majority of the way. Entries open 1st July so will enter then.

Some advice please though. As someone who hasn't run a marathon before, would you suggest doing one before as an easy long slow run (City to City, technically an ultra on the 4th Sept) or rather "race" a HM round 6 weeks prior to the qualifier / First ever marathon?

ja - I cant really help - as I pretty much just run at my marathon pace while training. A fast HM 6 weeks prior to a marathon is totally doable. Evn if you race a HM, the impact on your legs is negligible.

Keep an eye on OM World of endurance site. You can login using your strava profile, and I think it then will use that to forumalte generic training plans for you. Doesnt seem to work now though
