I’ve read a lot on the LTHR subject, and this link is probably the easiest to understand.

Your Threshold is simply the hardest possible effort you can sustain for 60 minutes. Your average heart rate, power and pace for this effort is your threshold. To do a 60 minute all out effort is extremely challenging and not necessary. A shorter 20 minute test can be done in place to establish your threshold.

I’ve tested my running and riding and both gave 170bpm as the average. Maybe that’s a fluke, maybe not. Anyway, more research needed and certainly makes for a good debate.

DCRainmaker tested the new polar range pretty much on par to chest heart rate. Technology is catching up quickly.

Just been on that site now, reading a review about the Polar M430. Seems like a good watch for the price. I've had my TomTom Runner 2 since 2016, but teasing at the idea of getting something different one of these days.

Ja, I'd say it's pretty hard to go wrong with any of the brands in the mid-level watch range at the moment. The UI, functionality and build have all made big strides across the board with Garmin, Suunto and Polar.

Yes, no support from Tom Tom. But even when they were still in SA it was a mission to get any support. I struggled 6 months to get a replacement band. I mailed both Polar and Garmin last week with some queries and got feedback almost immediately.

Was looking at the Polar Vantage M as well, even though it costs R1500 extra. It might be worth the purchase.

I read that Tom Tom support has pulled out of the country

Yep, I couldn't sell my Runner 2 if I tried.

Yip, resale worth keeping in mind as well... with Garmin dominating the market their products will generally be better known and in demand. There's nothing wrong with Suunto or Polar at all, but it's just a public mentality based on the companies various offerings. The Fenix 3 I think blew the other two out the window at the time and they've been playing catch up since.

Can't say I'm a big fan of Garmin though. That Vantage M looks enticing.

Hey WeekendWarrior80,

I use an M430 and it's a good watch for the price you pay. Does what it says on the tin. I would have liked a watch with a Triathlon function but I'm too poor for that. So I've used the M430 for about 2 years now. If I was you I'd fork out a little bit extra and go for the Vantage just cause of the newer tech. As for after sales service Polar hasn't disappointed me.

Not sure which phone you'd be syncing with but Polar's bluetooth needs one or two attempts to connect but other than that no issues.

Do some proper research before getting the Vantage M. They do look pretty on pictures though.

The product info sort of has me sold:

Although I still need to watch a YouTube video or two about the watch.

From unbiased reviews and other users. The new Sony GPS chip is not as accurate as other brands, but has better battery life. The heart rate is still very buggy, but might improve with future firmware upgrades. The straps on the black Vantage M is prone to splitting. The paint on the black bezel is not very durable. In essence it is still an unfinished product. They have a boat load of firmware updates planned, but until then you will have a lot of missing or bug infested features.

Had a friend start a 130km adventure race on the weekend with 46% battery on his Suunto 9, after tracking 18 hours of racing (wrist hr and gps) it was sitting at 2%...

Suuntp SA has a 5year warranty including 3 straps and 2 heartrate straps. No brainer IMO...
