Hey all

A bit of an arb topic but the little buggers are out there and they are hungry.

Went for a ride on the Helderberg yesterday and woke up with one of the critters latched onto my hand this morning.

Best to check yourselves after a ride.

Ja. Had tick bite fever also. Not lekker, definitely not lekker.

From my experience ( I am regularly in the veld), shaving your legs doesn't give the little bastards the ability to crawl up. And they do prefer dark warm places....

Any home remedies for keeping them off?

Eat lots of garlic.

Won't make you popular with your friends, but ticks don't like it.

Peaceful sleep stick under sunblock.

ALWAYS check every nook and cranny after a ride in the bush.

If you do find one - then don't pull it out and risk breaking the head off (thus increasing your risk of rickettsia (tick bite fever)) - rather gently cover the whole tick with vaseline (be generous), and it will withdraw the head, then you can remove it - this takes some vasbyt to be patient enough, but it's worth it.
