Some interesting insight from MTN-Qhubeka here: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/mtn-qhubeka-caught-by-surprise-meintjes-contract-u-turn/

"We'd already agreed terms with his manager and we'd spoken to him. The terms had already been met and a contract had been sent to Robbie Hunter," Smith told Cyclingnews. "For some reason there was a very big U-turn from Louis, I don't blame him for that. I don't know who to blame but we'd agreed, the contract had been sent. Maybe the contract hadn't been chased up because we'd become complacent because we thought why would Louis want to leave his team, this is his team."

I have to agree that it was a really crappy time to release the signing. I can't see Louis having had a hand in the timing of the announcement. Maybe Lampre is aware of Quebeka approaching 1 of their riders and this is just a stab back

Fact is, Louis was not going to get much support from MTNQ to chase his GC dreams. MTNQ just do not have enough quality climbers at the moment to support him.  For much of the Vuelta he had to fight on his own.  Now look at some of those breakaway rides the Lampre riders had.

This is basically MtnQ second squad giving 6 other Africans a chance to ride a Major tour. The squad they had in the TdF was a much better team finishing 5 overall.

Someone I know was posting pics of himself and Cavendish at this Abu Tour jersey launch. Thought it was weird cause Cav's season is meant to be over.

Seems to be a good fit. Ryder needs the sponsor. Abu Dhabi has the cash to splurge. And an over the hill Cavendish rakes in the retirement moolah. Etihad gets the coverage needed with a name like Cavendish on the roster.

Abu Dhabi wants to do everything Dubai does bigger and better. Following on from the Dubai Tour and the Skydive Dubai Pro-team. Like in the past Emirates sponsoring Arsenal. Abu Dhabi bought City. Might is certainly with Gulf Airlines though.

Only thing is they're still only pro continental. Is that a quiet exit from the limelight for Cavendish feeling that the legs aren't there anymore?
