Rhodes Memorial Car Park : Smash and grab from vehicle

Hi

Just be warned of theft from vehicles parked at the bottom gate. I had the misfortune to have my vehicle broken into and my bag stolen from under the drivers seat together with wallet id etc etc.

I left the carpark at 16h40 and returned by 18h10 to find my window smashed. All in broad daylight!

A no win for us bikers. First muggings and then theft.

Bastards... normally this time its okay, but UCT/Campus security is normally there. But because its "holiday" no guard.

I do often see glass there so these crooks know where there are no guards, it may be worthwhile contacting the campus and inform them, also let @kandui/rob/tablemoutainbikers/ppaExco know about this!

This has been a longstanding problem, but to be honest, it happens quite infrequently at Rhodes Mem. I just make sure never to leave anything, even if hidden from view. (The baddies watch you and see that you stick something under the seat.)

I stop there on my way home for a pedal so I have my work bag with. Unfortunately not much place to hide a bag in the back of a Hilux bakkie

I have the same problem with my Landy. I would recommend that you then rather try park on upper campus at UCT and near one of their security booths. Normally by late afternoon the students have mostly left and campus security will let you. The security on campus is better. Also a good thing if you ride alone and is worried about safety when you get back late because you know there will be someone when you return and while you pack up the bike.

Park at Forries

It is a 2 minute ride under the highway and along the path to Rhodes Mem, but it is well policd and well lit and a whole lot more secure.

It is also helluva convenient for when you come off the mountain at 9 and really feel like a beer.

Jokes aside, I park at Forries when I ride from Rhodes mem. It gives me massive peace of mind for an extra 5 minutes of free km

This is something that I have been wondering about of late, many a ride I get back to my car being the last in the area/car park...

Generally there isn't much in my car when I ride, keep most of the valuables on me, but thought that a good idea could be a safe in my spare wheel well, or even just the boot.  And then put a decal on the side of the car.. Car not locked, nothing of value inside. At at least that would prevent the hassle of a broken window.  Oh, and maybe a fuel supply cutoff switch in the same safe.

Feasible?

The problem with parking on upper campus is if you park there after about 8 and before 4 or 5, the campus traffic department can and will give you a ticket. Will probably be about R 600. the parking lot at the gate is fine because I think it is not one of UCT's parking. but the one way road that goes from campus past that parking is a UCT parking road and they can fine you if you do not have a UCT parking disc. After about 5 the traffic police leave and you can park anywhere and you won't be fined. but not really sure when they leave

Those campus fines have no legal value - they are not real cops. They will only ever be a problem if you want a parking disc for UCT, then you have to pay up your fines.

Saw this the other day

Basically park somewhere off Newlands Avenue. The suburbs between the M3 and Newlands Ave have 24 hour ADT on bike patrol and there are 2 little wooden huts with a posted guard there which has plenty of street parking near it.

Seriously, parking in an abandoned or soon to be abandoned lot closer to the nonsense to avoid an extra 1km is really silly.

You are going for a ride, so for peace of mind, avoiding a 'fine' and eliminating risk, just do an extra 4 minutes on the bike.

But then I suppose sensible, thehub and Capetonians don't belong in the same sentence......

I agree that they are not real cops. However after the second or third fine they will clamp the vehicle and then it is R 600 to remove the clamp, since the parkings are UCT's and they can enforce them.
