Been contacted by a Pierre Opperman from Knysna on a wanted ad.His phone numbers 063 627 5262 ;

064 690 0641. He had a beautiful offer with a e-wallet payment request. I then ask for a photo of his ID with the bike on offer and for a bank account number not an e-wallet number, my next request before payment is a copy of his latest municipal account with name and adres on.So far only received the e-wallet number. This man sounds as legit as my 80 year old father selling his lawnmower. He is smooth guys, older and deep afrikaans voice, likes to hit the Wanted ads. He has got taste in his offerings.

Just never do the e-wallet cash account thing. He gave me an Absa cash acc notice.

Did he have any excuses for not providing any of the info you asked for? His whatsapp is one of the dead giveaways. If scammers have whatsapp their status is usually the "hey there im using whatsapp" and its from recently meaning they created the whatsapp account recently. Mr opperman created his 6 days ago. And profile pic straight from the internet. Pity theres no way to catch these people.

I must just warn everyone that this man is super convincing and sounds very trustworthy.  He has some very good ways of making things easy for the sale to work. He said that he will be near me in two weeks and will bring the bike along, asked me for a deposit to secure the deal. Also asked from which bank I will be paying and provided a cash send to cell no. He has not yet provided the ID or Drivers license next to the bike I asked for.

I also like to ask for the seller to take a very specific photo of the item. I look at the back ground on the photo, does it look like the area he is from, do the bricks or paving look South African, I ask small questions like how is the weather today in Knysna and follow that up with a weather check.

My father in law always told me , You cant con a conman , hey but I try to protect myself !

I someone are legit, why would they not give you some personal details or specific requests if asked for. I love a nice and light carbon bike , but I dont want it to be none existing.

There's a pretty good Deon Meyer book about something in this line of work.

Basically, you con the conman by making him think he is actually working you over

Will read that for sure. I think we need to keep on the lookout for them and warn all the innocent buyers. Maybe bet this tread into an article for our Hubbers. Just worried that we make the con men wiser, but hey rather prevent cause there is no cure for this one.

Hi there, so sorry to hear.

Can you give a bit more detail regarding the transaction and how he went about his con, got you to make payment, etc?

Sorry, but maybe by giving us more detail, it can help prevent one of us in future falling victim to this

I am interested in buying the bike. Kindly get back to me via email at  barry4smith02@gmail.com  waiting to hear from you soon

"Thanks for the response, I'm really interested in buying this as a surprise for my cousin but only if you can assure me it's in a good condition. I am a petroleum engineer currently on a rig offshore. I really want this to be a surprise for my cousin so I won't let him know anything about this until it gets delivered to him, I am sure he will be more than happy with it. It will be secured paying via PayFast as I'm on a rig offshore. So let me know if you have an account with Payfast so I can make the payment. Note well: Pickup agent will come for the pickup as soon as I have made the payment."

I had him contact me too, dodgy

I was scammed by him too. I paid a small deposit for him to keep something for me. But as you guys say, he's very professional about it, he's so believable as a trustworthy old man, and knows everything about the products he is buying or selling. I only lost a small amount, but regardless of that, I got scammed.

He even wasted my time and gave me a false address which I drove a few hours to get to. I even got a friend to call him and enquire about the same product and he even told my friend it was taken as someone had paid the deposit (me), so he is quite clever about the way he does things, but he needs to be caught.

Does he only respond to wanted ads or does he post? If so where did he post an ad?

Surely we need to tighten the ropes on the Bikehub a bit.

You don't need to be logged in or have an account to view the classifieds, but maybe a login would be necessary to get the seller's personal details (phone/email).

That could also lead to better tracking of the visits to your classifieds and can help track down the known scamster.

It becomes a bit more difficult if you place your ads on multiple platforms.

Should someone without an account have access to browse the forums?

I suppose Admins have thought of some of these issues already and perhaps there are systems in place I have mentioned now.

He posted an ad on gumtree and olx. Completely unrelated to BikeHub, just thought I'd share my interaction with him. Once I showed interest, he messaged me an hour or 2 later saying someone else was interested, obviously luring me to pay a deposit.
