PPA could host rides like LBL did, 40km laps, that way you have a 40km race, a 80km race and a 120km race, same piece of road, no figure 8, no there and back etc. There are many loops around Cape Town which you can do this.

The PPA should change with the times and host more of these types of events. You don't only need to do these long circular route fun rides. For a circuit fun ride, you need less road closures and less marshals.

Hell, my favourite ride on the calendar, trumping the Argus, but not the DC :P was the Wingerd ride in Somerset West, was only 65km and after the ride they handed you a bacon and egg roll.

I remember that one. Was one of my first, when I was still a PPA member and rode road...

Sometimes I miss it, but tbh I don't think I could go back to road riding. Constantia wives are just woes on the road.

Track riders / Fixie gear riders are still the coolest!!! Just saying . . .

Apple's and Orange's..............

At one of my favorite coffee shops they have a sign that reads:

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.

We all ride a bike so we are all 'cool' and besides we need to keep perspective here: if how the PPA utilizes it's funds is one of the biggest issues we have in our lives then we are living a pretty blessed life.

P.S. I ride both road and mountain, and I just HATE this STUPID US VS THEM attitude! Grow up people!

but its not them vs us - 99% of cyclists are members of PPA - its ppa members vs the PPA committee who are sitting on R30m in cash reserves and like g'man who did not vote for the AFS said , it shouldnt be up to the members to apply for funding all the time. the committee are elected and they have an office staff who cost R2.3m a year in salaries who should be the ones finding ways to spend the money. one of the suggestions was for a road league. why cant the ppa organise road events and fund it themselves. or is that too much to ask?

Your risk of litigation has increased.

Swot analysis will reveal the real threats to be low turn over of exco and available roads to organise events on. Major issue being too many events shifted to Northern suburbs due to protracted road works southern suburbs.

All people like Icycling see is a problem and who to blame. Beyond that they are unwilling to delve deeper into the problem. It's easier to grandstand on a forum than too deliver.

I think you're being overly harsh on Icycling. All he has done is raise a legit concern. You guys are disagreeing on how to address it.

I agree. To see his comments as grandstanding would be similar to saying don't talk about the things that bother you.

If what he says needs factual correcting or enlightenment on matters, and if you are the one with the info to do it, then by all means help us all understand.

Yeah, I'm a CYCLIST, first and foremost.

In the rainy season I play on my Mudbike, in the windy season I play on my Roadbike.

R30m in cash reserve - Wow! Lots of money...., so interest is almost R2 ayear. Can't they use half million rands to bring road league back like before.... Come on...

Did they sell the PPA house at Mowbray? Did they buy office or rent the office in Kenilworth...

Absolutely.

Consensus is great but it should never be at the expense of honest debating over the issue or issues at hand. Just because you might disagree doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to the opinion being brought forward.

Like others here I thnk it's best to move away from blame and really understand PPA's situation. I know very little but I can vouch attending a meeting in their old premises where we sat in a cupboard -right or wrong, they made do with this for years. Their new offices could be seen as a reflection of their intention going forward, very slick from what I've seen so far.

lcycling tends to rub people up the wrong way but he does ask good questions.

We see road cycling struggling with less events every year and no proper league and on the flipside PPA getting financially stronger & moving into shiny new offices.

I think it is worth asking whether money is being spent correctly and if priorities are right,

We have the flagship event going from strength to strength but the rest of the road events seemingly declining, it worries me a bit that the success of the Argus is not feeding into the rest of the roadie calendar.

+1

Edit: As Myles pointed out earlier in the thread the PPA is meant to represent everyone who cycles in the Western Cape. That certainly does include looking after our roadie siblings. They have formed a subcommittee to look into this issue. I hope that subcommittee has a look at this thread (wishful thinking perhaps, I know) and considers the points raised by DJR and Savage. That said I hope that they tackle the issue with the same commitment that the safety subcommittee tackles theirs with. Certainly not too much to ask is it.

I agree, even though I'm not personally much of a lap dancing fan. Just kidding, it's Friday after all and I claim dyslexia! :D  ;)

It's not so much what CSA\WPC do or don't do, but rather that the PPA has a considerably larger membership base with people from that interested in seeing the road events grow, when they're not even maintaining the calender and road events are in the decline from a PPA perspective. The perception remains that CSA events are far more geared towards elite racers rather than average Joe wanting to enjoy an event out on his bike, doing social racing against his fellow worker types, which bring the numbers and along with that sets up an opportunity for some racing leagues at the front...
