Cracked carbon????

Hubbers views please!

Just found what looks like a 'crack' on my carbon frame - photos attached. Area is left side, across the join of the seat stay with seat tube. Looks like a surface 'crack' of the paintwork only. I can't get it to open up when flexing the frame. A consistent sound when tapped across the whole area.

It doesn't look like a scratch.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't there weekend before last, when I cleaned the bike, but the depth of the 'crack' does look dirty so maybe it's been there for a while? The bike is 2.5 years old, bought from new and it has done around 15,000 km.

Should I be (more) worried (than I am)?

How to check it our further? LBS? Original vendor? Specialist?

FFS, now I'm getting an error message when trying to attach jpegs!

Don't even mention the possibility of it being a surface crack on the paintwork to your LBS. Simply take the bike in, show them the crack and ask them to refer it to the agents for replacement. Get them to commit to time frames for feedback and eventual replacement early on so that you don't wait for 3 months to get your bike back.

Best to take it to a pro and let him look. Paint can crack.

I heard a recommendation to put a small cut (tiny) in the paint like a progress mark and if the crack progresses past that point you know there is additional flexing i.e. it gets worse.

...or it fails catastrophically while going down a hill. It might be fine, but get it checked out.

Can't see what frame it is but take it to a bike shop that is a agent for that brand .

Otherwise take it to Conrad at Eagle Canyon Cycles as he has a guy that does Carbon repairs.

Thanks for the advice Hubbers! Mail and pictures are just off to the original vendor. Will update as and when.

Let's hope I don't have to rush completion of a restoration project of a 32 yr old steel tourer to ride the 94.7. PB's would be a little more challenging!

Paint don't just crack like thats for no reason. Can assure you there will be an underlying crack beneath the paint

And I think that pretty much sums it up.
