I see BH bikes are advertising a dual sus electric bicycle which looks perfectly geared for hitting the trails.

It will be interesting to see if the concept takes off but I'm more interested to find out what the mountain biking community thinks of sharing trails with motorised bicycles.

I spent a week in france recently and the ebike is big over there! Many on them, not just on trails but on the road as well.

You can rent them and many were being used to explore the area and scenery

Not much different to sharing trails with an electric motorcycle - too fast for the unskilled set...

Have you tried one for more than 5 minutes?

Unless you race mountain bikes with the possibility of achieving podium positions, there are no reason except maybe affordability to not ride an pedal assist e bike (NO THROTTLE!!). My E Bike climbs better, descents better, are safer to ride, give me the same level of exercise, motivates me to cycle more and are amazing fun. When the e bike's put's such a big smile on peoples faces, it's going to be very difficult to deny.

You just revived a three year old thread for that?

Not everyone needs electric assistance to be motivated to ride more or climb more. Or descend more. Or to put a smile on someone's face.

If you like your ebike, then ride your ebike. All the power to you.

There is another thread with the same discussion that is more recent.  I can't remember the title now but there is more recent responses and arguments on this topic there.

i have an e bike and love it

now i can cycle with younger wife and 2 sons and keep up

family also says i push them on the uphills so they get pushed to ride harder

most guys who anti e bikes are ignorant about the mechanics of e bikes wrt to throttles, speed, and free riding

most e bikes are not driven by a throttle but what ever you pedal the bike matches its pedal driven not a throttle

so you cant ride if you dont pedal

and if you pedal slow you go slow

also due to laws in europe most e bikes are governed to not exceed 25 kms an hour at 25 kms an hour the motor switches off

so yes on the flats you do 25 kms an hour and on the uphills you get close to that at about 21 kms an hour

but downhill all you get is what most other bikes get but due to weight and handling probably far less

so the whole fear of e bikes shredding the trails and been a danger is a fallacy

e bikes are awesome and i fully realise most hubbers will be anti e bikes but in my view its time attitudes change

any thing that allows more people to ride cant be a bad idea can it ?

I was all for sharing with e-bikes until I got run off the trail by one on two different occasions

They don't give me space so what the heck.

(rorydewet "so the whole fear of e bikes shredding the trails and been a danger is a fallacy" ------ NOT)

And with that one statement you just showed your attitude... and you expect guys who ride bikes for the fun of it and to push themselves to change theirs.... who in all likelyhood are probably more knowledgeable with regard to bikes.... and slightly less arrogant !!!

I have no problem with electric bikes. Even on races. Only one thing. They MUST enter for the full marathon. Meaning that the batteries will run out and they will have to pedal the 20kg bike for the last 2 (or 5) hours.

Yup - and bought one too - for my dad

I still think they are overly capable for many riders - they go faster than their skills allow.
