mmmm wait n moment, you have been here since nov 2009...what is that, 6 odd years. Thus you yourself sit in the classifieds sniping any good deals that come along and couldn't be bothered by contributing to the community clearly and you get de moer in when someone snaps up something before you...

POT KETTLE BLACK if you ask me...hysterical how karma works.

PS friday its here

The only thing to do is not to buy if the items are over-priced if however it is fair game then it is fair. I do as a frequent vsitor to the classifieds have a problem with the bargains on something I want disappearing and snapped up before I can buy it. But as a seller if I get an item sold I am happy.

but that's a personal issue that I have with it - FOMO of sorts...

Yes i have been around a while, but my limited knowledge on anything cycle related leaves me usually looking for solutions here on the hub. I understand what you are saying and in no way disagree with you. my original post was to find out if this is what happens and whether or not it is a problem.

I have no interest in doing it myself and buying and selling at FAIR prices is all god and well

Yes yes Friday, spruit run this afternoon thats if my bike does not get stolen in the basement

But surely you can add some value, some opinion, some input even if its not cycling related. Not every thread is tech Q&A. I am not suggesting you are a crook but I am going to be blunt here...if you sit and snipe the classifieds the whole day hardly ever contributing you are as bad someone selling stuff on for more. This is a community and I am only interested in helping okes out that are part of this community when it comes to selling stuff.

Pay it forward and all that.

sure, sitting and waiting for things to come up instead of adding to the community is not right

Hi all, I am one of those buy and sell guys. Some of you know me, some of you don't but I have been in the cycling industry for a while now(call it 20+ years). Its not as simple as buying and putting it up for more money/profit. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Calls, emails, driving out to collect the bike, servicing, replacing worn parts, cables, bearings, clusters, blades, chains, sending forks out for service, delivering bikes to clients or just driving to show customers a bike who cant leave the office. So what started out as good profit at the end of the day ends in a much smaller profit but I know the client is happy and that makes me even happier. Hey if it was easy money everyone would be doing it but I try keep my prices low and that's what I am known for is quality bikes at affordable prices.

I have sold and bought many times on the Hub and it is always accompanied by a little negotiation.

I do not rip people off, but at the same time I feel sellers have the right to ask for and accept what they see as a fair price. I have in the past also accepted a slightly reduced price from a buyer if I get a "good felling" from them, simply because of the ease with which the transaction appears to be progressing.

On the flip side, an item I am currently selling is sitting around (as I use an alternative device instead); a prospective buyer seemed genuine, so I dropped the price a little for him only to be told that someone else has also offered him the same item some time before and he'd let me know. As expected, I've had no word from him. No harm, I'm not in a hurry.

As someone already mentioned, willing seller/willing buyer. If you don't want it, don't buy it. I'm not Santa, I'm not gonna give it away. If I get an awesome deal, why should I not capitalise on it? Is the OP suggesting that when looking through the classifieds, we all alert sellers to the fact that they could get more for their goods?

EDIT:

I wouldn't buy to sell, that just seems wrong, but like it or not, it will continue. Hub or not!

i really didn't know who this was referring to, thanks upshift for coming forward.

It seems like this is a legit business, and i think my analogy to car dealers at repo auctions stands - if there's bargains to be had, then the pros move in. So essentially, the hub has had such a good reputation for connecting buyers to sellers that the deals are widespread. good enough that it has attracted people who can be a middleman.

My feeling, is that if you are adding value then it's great. the only way that would be possible, is if you had a wide selection of stuff. If you're just flipping things straight back here then it's a bit swak, but really a sign of how the classifieds has grown to be such a big market place. The only way around this would be some sort of ebay/auction model. set a 5 day time limit and the best price wins.

There seems to be a lot of this on Gumtree. Recently, whether selling bikes, windsurfers, kites or bookshelves, I get an offer of 30-40% below my asking price in minutes. Always cash. Always, "will pick it up now".

I assume they are buy and sitting on it at "full" price.

They won't entertain the possibility of even an EFT, only cash, so I assume taxman never gets a sniff of this livelihood activity.
